Replaced ABS sensor, now that wheel 2x speed

I recently replaced the front discs. Unfortunately, whilst hammering the old disc off I snapped the abs sensor on the drivers side. New one ordered from Rimmer, fitted, now that wheel has the brakes applied whenever I try to drive the car. Connected INPA and it shows that wheel as turning twice the speed of the other three. So looks like traction control or something is kicking in, as it thinks the wheel is spinning. Also, when stationary, the diagnostics show that wheel value dancing around a bit, while the other three are steady on zero.
Does this look like a faulty sensor? Or the wrong type? Oddly, the wheel lockup also occurs now when the sensor is unplugged.
Only way I can drive just now is by unplugging the ABS altogether. But obviously lose all the associated items, inc speedo.
Three amigos lit up.
Can anyone help please?

What make of ABS sensor did you buy? Might be worth cleaning the contacts in the plug on the car just in case but it sounds like it’s faulty as that’s the only thing that reports the wheel speed to the ECU.

To be sure, remove the sensor and plug it on on the other side and see if that wheel has the same behaviour when observing via diagnostics.

Thanks. Sensors are original and rusted in. I had to drill the broken one out, so not easy to swap them around.
The replacement was the cheapest aftermarket one, I thought, it's a simple device, what could go wrong? 😁.

If it’s the sensor giving random readings then you should be able to just unplug the NS one and plug this one in and observe it with diagnostics.

If it’s the cheapest aftermarket you’ve fitted then I’m even more inclined to believe it’s a bad sensor.

I read a similar thing on here a few years ago if I remember right. Fitting a genuine LR sensor fixed the issue I think.

Took the replacement sensor off the car today. Resistance measures in high Megohms. A diode check across the terminals shows 0.7v in one direction, so looks like some kind of semiconductor in it. Could I have been supplied an active sensor? And mine should be passive? I'm reading 12v coming from the ABS unit with the sensor unplugged.
Why would that wheel still brake with the sensor unplugged? Would have thought it should just throw up a fault light?

Was the fault showing constantly before you’d even tried driving the car? If it was then plug it in where the NS sensor plugs in and see if the fault follows the sensor.

It’s the only way you’ll know for sure that it’s faulty. I know someone who bought a cheap sensor off eBay for his car and it wouldn’t work, he bought a genuine Bosch one (his car was an Audi) and it worked first time.

I’ve had waaaaaay to many problems with pattern parts over the years so will only buy Genuine where I can these days and if genuine isn’t available or is prohibitively expensive then OEM from the likes of Island 4x4 or somewhere.

The three lights are always on now as the sensor has been removed. With it connected and the abs plugged back in the lights are off but the fault is there when I try to drive. Lights will come on after about 30secs of driving.
