Black finishing strips on the "A" pillars loose

I have been hearing a rattling that sounded as though it came from the passenger mirror. However, when being driven in the passenger seat (a very rare occurance), the noise appeared to be coming from the base of the windscreen. The next time I cleaned the car, I tried the black finishing strips on either side of the windscreen. Both are simple to lift off requiring no force. Looking at the clip fittings, it would appear that they should be much more solid. That said, they remain in place at motorway speeds and I have not tried to compare with other Rangies. The driver's side one is as easy to lift as the passenger's side but only noise is from passenger's side.

So is mine odd? If so, any ideas on how to refit? New strips? New clips? Bodge with some adhesive?

My A pillar trim was also loose where it meets the roof. I managed to press it down and it locked on to its clip. I would guess it need new clips though.

I also have a problem with the trim under neath the windshield.... a clip is broken and at high motorway speeds it starts to whistle. Very annoying. I will be buying a new trim there also .

The A post trim pieces are stuck to the windscreen with an adhesive strip. What can happen is that if you've had a replacement screen they are supposed to replace the whole trim piece. If they don't then the adhesive rarely sticks properly to the new screen.

LR dealers usually use silicone sealant - however this is a bodge and should be avoided. You can order the new trims from Land Rover. Just make sure you clean the area thoroughly if you do replace them. You don't want the same problem in 6 months time.

Thanks. Sounds like a trip to the dealer.

I think the silicon (actually sealant) fix that Dan is referring to applies to the bottom seal - the A-Post trim is not stuck, and has never been recommended to be stuck by LR.

As Dan states, if they replace the windscreen, they rarely replace the clips, although this is the LR procedure, and this leads to this problem.

The best solution is to buy new clips, and the 2007 on A-Pillar covers which have a redesigned seal, and dramatically lower road noise - they are not that expensive from LR, and make a big difference. Instead of a foam seal, they have a wiper seal.

Part nos are:

DCB500162PNP - RH
DCB500172PNP - LH

You also need the clips and grommets (to stop water ingress)

DYA000040 (8 )
DYC000150 (8 )

The whole lot should be around £80, but the difference in wind noise is worth a lot more, even compared to old style trims that are correctly fitted!

BTW, the same applies to the E-Post trims.

@StevenA:

Really helpful. thanks for the advice. I'll pick some of these up as my LH trim is crap since they swapped the windscreen.

Thanks
Thumbs Up

I had that issue with my passenger side 'A' pillar strip, I could hear a buffetting noise when driving at speed and it was the strip lifting, got the dealer to fix it down again with new clips etc.. For info, I think I know a possible reason why it gets loose - all other 4x4s I've owned have a grab handle on the inside of the 'A' pillar, the RR does not, so some people (tends to be not so tall ones) getting in when the suspension is at normal ride height, need to hold something in front of them and its the only obvious place to get hold of, hence, weakens the fixings. Steve
