I have been lurking for a while as I am looking to buy a FFRR most likely a S/C 5.0 L322 and the forum has been a really valuable place to get information.

I already run a MY12 Jaguar XKR and love the engine which I understand is the same AJ-V8 Gen III as there is in the L322 and was really interested to see the many concerns around the timing guides there are on this forum relative to the Jag forum - I suspect this is mainly as the XKRs tend to be low mileage but if anyone knows any different - great to understand more.

I am a bit of a serial JLR fan as I also have an older MY2001 XJ (last of the steel bodies and yes, I replaced the tensioners too - you would think that JLR would have worked harder on timing guides/tensioners.

It seems like you guys have got this down as an almost mandatory service item on the 5.0 - in jaguar world it is spoken about more as a potential risk/something that somebody once hear someone mention over in RR land.

My understanding is that this is a gradual failure with a relatively long lived rattle giving you notice (not like the engine grenading timing tensioner failure on the x308 where the rattle happens before slip). I also spoke to someone in the industry who said they have known cars have a rattle for years without issue.

I went to have a look at one for sale the other day and it defo had the timing chain rattle. The 5.0 is a loud engine in the XKR and when I had a look at a few of those I was put off with what turned out to be just the standard ticking noise which is pretty pronounced but this was very different, very much a rattle (think 90s diesel) and not a loud ticking. Aside from the rattle, the engine is a little quieter in the RR compared to the XKR.

The other question I had is the suspension raising - is it ok if the suspension goes up in two stages (i.e. rear starts and then front catches up) or is that a sign of trouble?

The rear suspension always lifts before the front sir/s... It means at night you don't blind other road users/traffic when raising the suspension
