feeling thru steering wheel

Hi, guess this is my 1st on here, normally I'm on the D3/4 site.......

anyway my boss has just bought a 2nd/3rd hand Range Rover (P38) and brought it to work for me to "have ago".
I believe it's an HSE 4.4 V8 Auto (petrol).
during the "have a go" drive I noticed that as we drove over any kind of bump (road repair so slightly raised/dip) I could feel what can only be best described as suspension movement fore/ aft.
there was no associated knock or sound just this feeling thru the steering; so the question is, "Is this normal" or should I be telling him to have something checked ASAP???

Chris

Hi Chris,
If it's a 4.4, it's not a P38 (either 4.0 or 4.6) and if it were a P38, this wouldn't be the correct forum Razz . The P38 was <2002, the L322 or LM 2002 and after.

That said, regardless of which RR, any unnatural movement in the suspension/steering should def be checked asap regardless of the vehicle type. The suspensions in the solid axle RR's (P38 and earlier) are prone to fore/aft movement when the control arm bushings wear - manifests itself as wandering. You can drive for a while like this w/o great probs, but I'd make sure of what it is at any rate. And if it is an L322, I'd have it looked at quick.
RRC 2Dr, RRC 4Dr,
P38, and 2 L322s
(wife thinks I'm nuts - prob right, too)

As per Steve above: Regardless of what car it is - this is not normal behavior and your boss should get this checked out ASAP.
