I had a few issues trying to get my tow ball into the socket.

Did it eventually. However, it had not had the red bung in for some time.

What is the best grease to use please?

It’s likely rust and scale built up in the receiver that would need removing/chipping off to get it to latch properly.

I took mine off and took to a local place to have it gently media blasted to clean it up. I then sprayed it with hammerite black paint on the outside and coated the inside with some JCB HP grease we had in the workshop. The red bungs are available from LR and aren’t expensive so worth getting one of them to go in it afterwards.

I suggest some Outboard motor waterproof grease. Otherwise Copperslip.
