Sticking rear caliper

So I thought I would check my rear brakes just on the off chance as I saw someone mention that could be a cause of the droning/vibration at speed.

This is the nearside after a short run:

This is the offside:

Got the wheel off as soon as I could and it looks like the piston is really stiff in the bore.

Question now is do I rebuild them or just replace. If the latter does anyone know where I can get new pistons? Christian.

Just my opinion but i would first push the piston out by pressing the brake not so much it pops out and inspect it. if its badly pitted i would say the caliper lining is as well and probably needs replacing.

If it looks fine I would grease the piston and repeat procedure a few times to see if it frees up.

Also carefully check the sliding caliper pins for pitting and corrosion again if ok copper grease and reassemble.

Try a run and see if the temp drops

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with putting copper grease on the piston. Not sure where you got that suggestion from, I've never heard of that before.

I have ordered a new set of pistons and seals from Rimmer Bros just now. I'll overhaul them as they are genuine TRW LR callipers.

I lifted the dust boot and could not see any corrosion or scoring on the piston at all. Christian.

Was the difference between the temperatures obvious to a touch by hand on the wheel ?

I am just curious because I haven’t got the luxury of an infrared temperature gauge and should check mine because they haven’t been serviced for a few years other than checking plenty of pad wear left.

Yes, the nearside was almost stone cold (ambient temperature) and the offside was boiling hot. The wheel was warm.

It's got so hot there the pad wear sensor is partially melted. Christian.

Thanks for reply.
I have just done the touch test on mine after a five mile errand run and both sides only just above cold.

I reckon you're good to go then.

I fitted my retraction tool to stop the piston coming right out and I pushed the piston out with the pedal and it took a lot more effort than it should do. I'll take some pictures when I refurbish the callipers. Christian.

Yes you are right the copper grease can affect rubber components, that said most garages seem to use it on anything! Rubber Grease or Brake assembly or most other hiigh temp grease is what's used
