Gearbox ticking noise

This morning I started the beast and upon selecting R , the gearbox began to make a ticking noise in sync with the RPM. It resembled the noise of fan blades hitting onto a plastic tab or bicycle wheel spokes caught up a twig or something. Selecting N the noise stopped. I'm not sure if there was a little bit of noise in D at first too, maybe not. Drove for a Km and checked again by selecting R, noise was barely there. Drove for another Km and noise was gone. All shifts are smooth as ever, no shudder uphill no loss of drive on R.
I'm 3K km from hitting the 50K Km mark for my scheduled gearbox oil chage... Any thoughts?

This morning again...

Initial noise is the handbrake being pulled

https://vimeo.com/653578163

Yesterday was normal in the early morning start, having sat the entire Saturday night, changed positionon the driveway. No problems late evening either, going for a short drive, after having sat the whole day.

The noise only comes when cold, only when in R. It goes with the RP. It becomes less pronounced after driving a couple hundred meters, then vanishes after say half a km drive.

What the hell could that be? Mechanics are clueless...And it's driving me nuts...

Sounds like a box out job too me sadly.

Does it do it in any other gears or just reverse?

No, just on R and only in the morning, when cold.
Goes away if I select R having driven for a few hundred meters.
I can reverse 100 times during the day without
any noise reappearing.
No thud, no shaking no shift delays. All is working
normally even while this happens.

Does it sound like something you have encountered before?

First thing I'd do is get the gbox oil changed and make sure the level is correct, always try the simple solution first

Good luck

Agreed. Booked for gearbox oil and filter change on Thursday. I'd have these done anyway as I'm nearing 50K km since last done.

Noise hasn't returned during the week. Oil level checked and was okay. Today changed the gearbox oil. No debris other than the usual stuff on magnets, old oil looked bright enough...Gear shifts had always been smooth but, they do feel even smoother now, almost imperceptible Thumbs Up

Could have been a happy day but a rusted misfiring spark plug spoiled it big time... I guess there's worse in life so never mind...
