How can you tell if one of your rear shocks has gone.
Seem to get a bit of a hollow type of sound from the arse end after going over various bumps whilst driving.

You will feel it when you drive it - unstable and bouncy rear end and frightening instability when cornering. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Possibly also oil traces on outside of lower damper housing - sometimes called oil misting.
This can be the cause of MOT failure if it looks "excessive". Paul,

The ride on my car is a touch harsh and doesn't feel as smooth as the last SC I had so I'm about to change the rear shock absorbers.

If they're defective a dull thud could be possible but I'd suggest it's more likely to be a bush on the suspension or even the shock absorber mounting bush.

Might be wrong though

Thanks for all the replies.
Have had a look at the bushes and they dont look too bad for the amount of miles on them.
I,ll get my garage to check them when I,m next in there to see if they need replacing.
