Door speaker replacement - bonus cavity rustproofing | |
Common occurence of the H/K door speakers blowing, they are clearly not the greatest quality as upon inspection the voice coil seems to have swollen and is now contacting the magnet and causing a scratching sound.
I decided to replace them with a pair of Focal RSE- 165 component speakers, a fair set at £90. I'm not interested in spending £300 on a really good set for our third car.
I stripped off the door panel (which I can do in a matter of 60 seconds now) and whipped out the old H/K speaker from the door and then out completely by desoldering it from the frame.
Its screwed and bonded into the frame so it took a bit of encouragement to come free.
I then checked the polarity of the old unit and confirmed the new drivers have the same terminal orientation and soldered them in.
Here's the Focal speaker in the mounting frame, I used hot glue to secure the foam sound direction ring to the front of the speaker.
While I had the speaker out and the door panel off, I decided to hit the inside of the door with Dinitrol ML. It's great stuff and you can apply it to small areas without breaking out the compressor and shutz gun:

Here's the driver back in the door, only the panel left to refit.
