Odd coolant behaviour

Last two mornings my low coolant warning flared up then almost immediately went away, after driving for 30 mins engine nice and warm I checked the level and it’s a good few inches below cold fill mark, then today I went to
Top it up and it’s at the bottom line if the cold fill mark, no leaks, new bottle is this normal [/img] 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

I had this fault, turned out to be the coolant level sensor. It's stuck into the bottom of the coolant expansion tank on my TDV8 3.6, not sure if the 4.4 is the same. It was an easy fix, providing your hands resemble those of Snow White's buddys !

It’s not the fact I’m getting the message it’s that some days the coolant is inches lower than the low mark other days it’s ok, where is it going 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

Ah, sorry, its been a long day !

(Apologies if I teach you to suck eggs at any point)

So assuming its not coming out of anywhere you can see. Is there any dodgy looking "mayonnaise" in the oil filler cap ?

Are you getting any white smoke out of the exhaust on a cold start ?

Can you perform a chemical sniff test at the coolant filler (cheap kits available for less than a tenner on eBay) - that's going to give you a clue if you've got any interaction between the water system and the combustion system - which hopefully you haven't !

Those are the quick tests, it gets a bit oily after that.

How many miles on the engine ?

No oily sludge, no white smoke I’ve had it pressure tested, just very odd one day the level
Is low the next spot on never too much just odd 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

I had a similar issue last year, where the coolant would be fine for a couple of days then would drop. There were no obvious coolant leaks but, whilst my indy mechanic was fitting new gaskets on the oil cooler, he noticed that a hose that runs to the EGR Cooler was badly perished and 'mushy'. He replaced that hose and the coolant level has been fine ever since.
When he did the oil cooler gaskets, I had asked him if that was where any coolant was leaking from and he said definately not, as any coolant leak from the oil cooler would have put water into the oil, giving the oil the 'mayonnaise' look.

My problem is it’s low one day then the next it’s ok so it’s not leaking as it wouldn’t return to normal very odd indeed 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

Again, it says Range Rover on the front and back... need I say any more....

Just drive it and enjoy it... Thumbs Up Pete
