Coolant in oil - 4.4TDV8

It’s not good folks. Garage drained the oil and found loads of coolant in it. They’re investigating further.

Any obvious failures cause this? Thought the oil cooler would be the other way around; ie oil in coolant.. 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)

There's an oil cooler on these that allow the oil and coolant into the same cooler. It's like a small radiator.

I wonder if it's possible that's failed and is allowing coolant into the oil. It could even be the gasket underneath it rather then the cooler itself.

Thanks. Garage say it’s the head gasket (done the fluid test) so sounds like the end of my time with an L322 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)

Wow. That's some serious bad luck.

I don't think I've read of another 4.4 TDV8 with a failed head gasket before! 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Censored ! That's rare for a 4.4...
Is that the engine that someone else put in previously? I recall our conversation.
What's the plan? Fix and flog?

Thats Big Cry Sad

Can their test differentiate between coolant that has got into the oil via the head gasket vs coolant that has got into the oil via the oil cooler? 2010 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black

The test that they've likely done has been sniffing for exhaust gases in the coolant I'd imagine. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Ah yes, good point......

The only head gasket I've had fail on a car made itself so obvious no additional diagnosis was necessary Surprised 2010 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black

not heard of one head gasket issue
but loads of people have the oil cooler gasket issue
unless the garage really know the 4.4TDV8
then def get a second opinion from one who does
. Cheers, Greg

Yeah very uncommon. The garage (decent specialist) have never seen one.

Could be a first, could be something else. Either way I’m done - anyone want it? 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)
