That there seems to be a launch control used where the vehicle holds at 2500rpm then takes off. There's another video showing it on a pre-2017 vehicle. I know about the low speed off-road launch control but is there one for fast starts? I can't find any reference to it in the manual.

I'm not planning on drag racing, it's just intrigued me as I've seen it twice now! Anyone else seen this or know any more info? FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

On some auto's it's foot on the brake and full throttle, releasing the brake launches you. BMW i3 Electric Car

on a 4.4 the second turbo comes in around 2500rpm, maybe thats what you mean... ... - .- -.

Looking at the video his hands don't move, he's is S1 gear (Sports mode first) so I'm guessing it must be the left foot brake, you can hear something release before he shoots off

I think I saw a video about the Audi system and launch control has 10 goes and then it’s new gearbox time.
So it’s going to be an expensive hobby for the people doing it on the videos.
However I have nothing constructive to add to the actual question.

Having watched it a few limes I'm thinking he must. I would have thought the vehicle wouldn't allow you to rev with the left foot on the brake but I can't see him doing anything else. Even the chapter on the video is entitled "launch control" so it just made me curious.

Many Audi automatics and some BMW's I've driven if you have left foot on the brake, disengage drive and allows revs to rise to a predetermined level to allow turbo's to be spooled etc. When the brake is release the gearbox then transmits the drive and youre off. BMW i3 Electric Car

If the engine and box are nice and warm and you have a standard auto box then holding it on the brake will not harm the box, it will overheat rapidly if left there for any time but what he did is fine...

It is one way to check the stall speed of the torque convertor... it is also how to do a stationary burnout in a two wheel drive car... Nail the throttle while feathering the brakes to use the non driven wheels to hold the car while the power spins the wheels...

It can make quite a difference to the 0-60 time in a turbocharged motor as it pre spins them...

It doesn't make much difference on the S/C as it has buckets of torque from tickover... I had to try one but I don't make a habit of it....

I've just tried it - yep, it does let you rev with the left foot on the brake, the drive is engaged as the vehicle squatted down under load. I didn't actually do the 'start' but I could have released the brake at 2500rpm and I'm sure it would have shot off.

Do the same thing in reverse and once you get tires all smoking haul it into drive you will get the familiar black J strips on the pavement. Occasional you will get the engine to run backwards which it doesn't do well.
Practiced on lots of rental cars, mainly two wheel drive with mixed results...blown engine, failed transmission, broken axle etc.

Why anyone wants to do racing starts in a 6,000pound plus, $100,000 plus 4wd luxury car is fascinating...although I will say the 5.00 SC surprises a lot of boy racers when you accelerate onto a freeway. Not sure the new BMW 4.00 Turbocharges will be quite the same..
