TDV8 Gearboxes

Does the gearbox on the TDV8 have the same life expectancy as the TD6 gearbox ? or are they different / upgraded / modified ?

Thanks Thumbs Up

Different box. 6 speed instead of 5. ZF unit I believe.

Yup, the 6 speed belongs to the same family as the 5 speed ZF box, almost identical infact, although slightly longer to incorporate the extra gear. Obviously a different valve block and software.

With an oil service interval of 60,000 miles.

if i am not mistaken the TD6 box is a GM box which is not as good as the ZF box, hence all the issues.

they were troublesome in the X5 too. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Correct except for the 'not as good part'. The ZF has it's flaws as well - %wise maybe a little less than the GM, but the GM box is smoother.

Yes it is. Drive both back to back.

Australia 2008 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Rimini Red

Mackie Automatic Transmissions in Glasgow who service mine and appear to know more than most on these transmissions say there really is not allot between the GM and ZF "boxes" even with regular servicing its a case of when and not if , in both cases they weren't designed to haul around the weight of a Range Rover.
the ZF six speed has proved to be better but that's all "better but not perfect" if the control unit goes its time for a new "box" because its mounted internally and apparently rebuilds are less strait forward
Mind you this is all what one business has told me and not documented fact. 2008 MY Supercharged

TD6 Auto was a GM 5L40E. As others have said TDv8 is ZF

if my FF had a new gearbox module last year before i bought it, does that mean it will have had the gearbox replaced???

i think i may have to get onto LR customer services, they should have an answer. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Stornoway Grey

The ZF6HP box is alot different to the older ZF 5 speeder fitted in our Strangies and most BMW's.

The 6 speed box is of better design (Of which you would hope for in a later box).

It's the only part of my Range Rover I hate in all honesty.... Though tough wood still silky smooth. It will fail one day without warning tho. Used to have:
2005 FFRR 4.4 Vogue - BRC LPG Conversion & Remapped

Now have:
2008 SSRR 3.6 TDV8 - HSE and plenty of toys
