Damaged compressor piston?

Hi all,

So driving along yesterday I’m the compressor was working fine then it made a metallic noice and then just stopped and I got a fault.

Got back and the motor was very warm when I took it out (more or less straight away) it’s the hitachi type .

Anyway I disassembled it and the piston is smashed badly - anyone and this before and know the cause? Can you buy a piston and is it worth it?

All I have ever seen in the way of parts are service kits with seals etc. Plus looking at the broken bits, the tapered bore the piston fits in is probably damaged or worn. You could get a compressor from a breaker and service it prior to fitting. Obviously a new unit is the best long term answer.
