What winter tyres?

I did search, honest.

Anyway I'm in the process of securing some 19" rims to use on our MY11 car in winter (when ave temp is <7'degrees?).

Can anyone recommend what winter tyres to use, what exact tyre size, prices and good suppliers?

Cheers
Tom

Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme are very hard to beat as an all round Winter Tyre and probably the very best in the snow. Thumbs Up

Oh forgot to mention I may have a set..... Whistle

Feel free to pm me details: price you want, are they new, exact size.

I also need to establish if the wheels I've found will fit our MY11 FFRR
Theyre a friend's, never used. Would be max 3yrs old I reckon. Are
There any previous yr wheels which might not fit?

I just got four General Grabber AT's 255/55 19's these are not the old AT2 and although alot of the Disco 3/4 boys have tried them I haven't heard of any one fitting them to a Full Fat yet so unfortunately no direct opinions of how good they are, yet. 2008 MY Supercharged

Thumbs Up +1

They even do them in 20" which is what I have Very Happy - I'm not allowed to have different looking wheels for the winter Rolling Eyes

Vred Wintracs definitely, I have tried the all round BFG's, Avon, Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear, now running Vreds all year round - absolutely fantastic last winter and the wear is holding up well, check the D3 forum under tyres for a thread, last time I looked it was up to 18 odd pages...

While we are on the subject will the below alloy & tyre combination be any good for winter?

these are the newer 7 spoke 19'' wheels and will do the job admirably....

The wheels are perfect but the tyres may be a little over the top for everyday winter use including long journeys. The MTR is a specialist "Mud" tyre with very deep tread blocks designed for offroading although fine for local use.

You really want a tyre with a proper road tread but with a winter bias like the Vreds and others.

MTR's are awful in the wet (and not that great in the dry) - as has been stated they have wide open treads so are great in mud but there is relatively little rubber in contact with the road therefore not much grip.

In the winter they are good in deep snow but useless on ice as they have big blocks of tread.

The Vredestein's have lots of very small blocks - when you look at them closely it looks like there's lots of cuts in the tread (technical name is sipes I think) - that allows lots of tread flex which apparently is very good for ice. They also have a softer rubber compound so are much grippier below 5 degreed celsius than regular tyres - but wear much quicker from arounf 15 degrees.
