3.6 or 4.4

Hi all

Looking to get back in a L322

Any possible benefits if a 3.6 over a 4.4 tdv8? Or is the newer car the winner?

Thanks

Simon

4.4 for me every day. Nearly 10 years with mine. Epic engine. Has the 8 speed gearbox whereas 3.6 has 6 speed.

4.4 more power, barely above tickover on motorway.

That said, all bar the late 3.6s don’t have a DPF which can cause issues if you only do short journeys.

Prices are good for buyers now I recon.

Have a drive of both, see the difference.

4.4 all day long. I had a 3.6 for 3 years, so wish I had gone for the 4.4 sooner. Had my 4.4 for just over a year now and it's the best I've ever owned. 3.6, turbos seem to let go as do the intake manifolds. 4.4 much better fuel economy would you believe, I do a lot of short runs in mine, but every week I take it for a good run along a dual carriageway to open her up a bit, never had a problem with dpf in doing that. What is your budget?

I keep an eye on the L322 facebook group and it seems that 3.6’s have vastly more serious problems than 4.4’s. A lot more of them being scrapped as not economical to repair. Anecdotal but just my observation. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Grey/Ivory

If you get a 3.6 you’ll always be thinking “I wish I’d got a 4.4”

Not entirely true. For example with 3,6 you don´t have to sit with the cold sweat on your hands and pray the gear selector chooses to rise up, just grab the stick and go.

Besides after remap, it will outperform 4,4 since there´s 2 proper turbos, each with their own banks. Atleast mine does. Also blanking the EGR´s will keep those children´s toys harming anything, not to mention no DPF to worry about.

If you keep reading about the problems, vast majority is about 4,4 and it´s nuisances, yes, 3,6 can have a catastrofic failure but that´s something you can prevent by blanking the EGR´s and with good maintenace.

I believe there are couple other models in LR-portfolio that can have a catastrophic failure not depending on anything but the relativity of a Moon and Uranus.

Yes, I would like to have the 8-speed box but without the silly rotary selector.

Apples and oranges. -07 Stornoway Gray TDV8

I've owned both - 3.6 from new until it was becoming a liability. Replaced with a late 4.4 and I wish I'd made the change earlier. Much earlier..... Big Cry The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Get the 4.4 - it’s an amazing engine - it never runs out of steam due to the massive torque output and the acceleration is phenomenal - especially noticeable when your on the *Autobahn* 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
