Transmission in 3rd Gear but dash and stick in Park

Hello,

So...i was checking all the fuses as i had water ingress in the AV rear side panel.

I started at the rear fuse box, then the one in the glove box and finally the main brain under the bonnet. I took each one out and checked the the blades using a small meter.

Now, here is the crux. I forgot i hadn't disconnected the battery. I will pause for the well deserved: FFS / You did what!/ sighs / belly laughs / etc..........

Anyways, the car now wont start. All the electrics come on on the dash when i turn the key. The fuel pump is active, no MILs, no errors on the ICarSoft tool. But when i turn the key to start it i get nothing. Lights and radio fade as if a power drain. The only thing i have found is that the diganostics state Transmittion current gear is 3 and the selected gear is P.

Guessing that because the Transmission ECU thinks its in 3rd Gear it wont turn the engine.

So, have i goosed the Transmission ECU by being an ejit with the fuses, or is it just coincidence?

Is there a way to reset the ECU? I have tried the battery disconnect and hard reset etc.

Any help, advice and general mockery appreciated. Whistle "Things don't just fall off in your hand.....unless you own an L322!"

Can't say I've ever disconnected the battery when checking fuses, never had a problem...

I'm guessing you have put a fuse back in the wrong place, easy to do when you come to a fuse with no fuse next to it... you now just have to find which one it is... Shocked Pete

Gear selector indicator switch could be giving out the wrong signal. Try operating the gear selector back and to through all positions several times, also try putting the gear lever in the semi manual mode and moving it back and to ( if same as my 2006 ) see if it changes? Quick cheap test.

Multi stage resistor ( hedgehog ) did come to mind, but not sure that it could cause this fault?

As for resetting the ECU, not sure as I only have an Icarsoft reader, not a Gap tool

If I am completely off the mark then that will make us both muppets, been there before, you are not the only one by far to make a daft move Whistle Rolling with laughter

Thanks Merchy - tried that. Even took the centre console apart to make sure the gear stick was pulling on the cable when moving.

Will keep digging. "Things don't just fall off in your hand.....unless you own an L322!"

Just in case you do not have a car manual to hand for the fuses / relays, this may help for the correct locations

Haylands is probably more accurate, I was probably over thinking and complicating the issue Whistle

Just look for ones near a space with no fuse then try to identify the hole and the fuses either side, you maybe able to tell from the workshop manual which one should have the fuse....

If that didn't work I would stick a 20 amp fuse in each hole, one at a time, and see if the diagnostics show you are in park...

Not saying this won't damage something but it's what I would try... Thumbs Up Pete

Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up Keep us posted.

A while back, laid a load of fuses out on a big piece of card, in order of removal, thought 'Les problemos' then when I got a cuppa, my grand daughter who has inherited my OCD, re-arranged them in a colour coded fashion. Thud
Just had to smile and say what a great job she had done, albeit through gritted teeth.

Anyways...

Turns out my 2007MY TDV8 has a different fuse set-up to the picture shared.

I have empty slots (not connected at all) where the diagram says it should be and where the drawings state empty, i have visible connections requiring a fuse..... Confused

Any of you kind souls have a 2006/07 RR Vogue SE (2007MY) with a picture of the glove box fuse box that hasn't been touched by an ejit??

What happens if you put the car in neutral rather then park? The car will still start with the selector in neutral so might be worth seeing it that will allow it to start.
