l322 air suspension HEADACHE!

Hi folks, still got my suspension problem!. I've had her up to Strathearn Engineering in Aberuthven to get the fault fixed once and for all only to have paid shy of £1200 for a new compressor, air tank and solenoid block, which was alledgedly the problem, but guess what?, IT'S NOT!. The fault is still there doing exactly the same as before I put her in to get fixed. She works normally for about 15 seconds and then the 'SUSPENSION INACTIVE' or 'SUSPENSION FAULT' comes up on the dash. Even sitting ticking over not touching anything she goes into this fault mode. Still telling me the compressor is filling the tank too slowly which is strange after all the work I've had done. Anyone any ideas as I'm ready to loose the plot over this?. Cheers for your help, Del.

Did they actually fit a new compressor?

I fitted a new one myself before I even thought about letting anyone near her and had the same fault. Then I bought another new one, this time from Strathearn, same problem, that's when I bit the bullet and put her into them to get the problem sorted. They told me the compressor was faulty and they were going to fit another new one, compressor number 3. In the mean time, they said the valve solenoid was gubbed and needed replaced aswell as the air tank!. This work was done before I knew there was a problem with them. I didn't mind as I wanted her fixed and they're the specialists. 8 days later she was collected and driven home. No drama's on the way down but went to Equi's for ice cream after dinner to celebrate and BANG!, 'SUSPENSION FAILURE NORMAL HEIGHT ONLY' appears!. Now she doesn't even have to move and the fault appears. She's going back up on Tuesday for them to have another look, pity it cost so much and the parts were replaced when it looks like they didn't need to be. Crying or Very sad

A specialist should know that there are more to fault codes than just the obvious, time and time again it is not the fault stated but another problem that the car "thinks" is the one shown. If they truly are a specialist then they should know how to evaluate and test items before randomly changing them.

You seem to be very laid back about it, personally I would be fuming and insisting that they sorted the problem once and for all and at their expense as you have spent enough changing things that are fine...

What did they allege was wrong with the tank?? the only reason for replacement would be a hole in it, anything else wrong with it and the item can be changed.

The compressor is easy to test with basic equipment, there is no way two new ones were faulty, they switch themselves off if they get too hot, the only reason for failure is through years of use, how old was the old one, they should have a 12mth warranty on it??

The chances of three parts of the system failing at the same time are nil, they should know this...

Sorry for the rant but this kind of service from garages is totally unacceptable, they are specialists and should know how to diagnose faults before spending customers money... Pete

Pete, it's a bit annoying mate but nothing that can't hopefully be sorted. They said the tank needed replaced due to corrosion and the valve solenoid was faulty. The first compressor I installed was from a 2010 RR with 38k on the clock. That didn't rectify the problem which was why I went to them and bought a brand new one, that didn't solve the problem either. That's when I took her up to them and asked them to fix her for me. A couple of days later they said the new compressor they supplied was faulty (it happens seemingly) and the new one had been ordered. 2 or 3 days later I called to see how things were going and that's when I was told the solenoid and tank had to be replaced. couldn't understand why but I went with it anyway knowing that I wouldn't need to worry about those parts failing any time soon. They noticed I had a leakoff pipe problem and fixed that for me too. They're a good bunch of guys, very helpful and pleasant to talk too. I'm confident they'll get her fixed properly this time as the options are running out for parts too replace. I'm more annoyed at myself having to get someone else to look at her as I always keep my vehicles in tip top condition myself. I could've completed a trial by elimination system myself and saved £500 labour but wouldn't have had a comeback like I have now. My patience is wearing very thin on this one and I need a positive result on Tuesday. Censored

Sounds like the same symptoms my D3 suffered before I got rid of it. In the end it was the entire wiring loom to all four corners that was corroded and in places there were bare bits of wire where it had stretched. At the time (3 years ago), the local LR indie in Dunkeld said he had heard of 10 that needed re-wiring. I went through a compressor and numerous sensors until the loom was replaced. That fixed it but I sold it soon after so don't know if it finally sorted the problem. It was due to a combo of crap design to allow the wiring to be exposed to the elements in places and the awful winter in 2010/11 resulting in very salty/gritty roads.

Anyroadup, you might want to try him too for another opinion.

Cheers Nobby, I'll give him a shout and see if he can shed any light on it. I was up in Dunkeld today too, I could've popped in n had a blether with him. I'll keep you all informed to the goings on at Strathearn on Tuesday. Wink

Ok folks, quick update...
That's my Vogue spent the day back at Strathearn Engineering and as of yet I've heard nothing of her condition.
Hopefully I'll get her back in tip top condition this time with 100% fully working air suspension that my £1200 warrants.
I'll keep you posted on their findings. Wink

Ok, called the garage for an update to see how things have been going over the last 2 days. They can't find a problem!. It's working perfectly apart from them dropping the suspension down n up 3 times and the compressor overheats. Turns out that it was my own compressor that was fitted and not the new one I bought from them, it was still in the box in the boot!. I checked this out of curiosity, each compressor has its own serial number. I'll leave it for a couple of days n call them again. I'm starting to get a bit frustrated now. Confused

So they said the compressor was bad, sold you a new one but never fitted it because the old one was working....

Hmmmmm, might be time to find another garage when they have sorted this mess out....!! Pete

latest update...

Asked my dad to nip up for her on Wednesday as she was allegedly fixed, blockage in the compressor to tank pipe seemingly, with another bill for £170. No new parts fitted this time!. He got 1.5 miles down the road and 'BING BING BING' SUSPENSION FAILURE NORMAL RIDE HEIGHT ONLY...
He phoned me from the petrol stn to let me know and I asked him to take it straight back to them. They worked on her Wednesday and Thursday but couldn't find anything wrong.
I basically lost patience with them and told them I was coming back for her as this was getting ridiculous and when I thought a new compressor at £300 n odd quid was all I wanted, to be just short of £1400 and the RR is the same as when I took her up the first time, I'm now skint for Christmas with a STILL faulty RR.
Can anyone please help with any information on what to do?. I'm at my wits end here, new compressor, new air valve block, new tank, no leaks, cleared blockage and a system reset allegedly.
SOMEONE MUST SURELY BE ABLE TO HELP ME, PLEASE?. Cheers again, Del.

Sorry to hear it is not fixed - bloody annoying!

Seems like you will have to keep working along the chain until you find the culprit.

Assuming ECU is OK ( Shocked ) and given you are satisfied the compressor, tank & pressure sensor, main valve block, are all OK, your next port of call should be:

a) the valve block for the rear and the front (tucked away under the inner mudguards)
then
b) sensors
or/then
c) air bags

If it is not the parts of the system it may be the connectors to it, so you may need to check the resistance of all the wiring - sensors back to ECU, for continuity, and than none of the pipes to and from the air bags / valve blocks are leaking in any way.

It has got to be in there somewhere.

No mention of any fault codes - do you have a reader or output to advise on what the car is saying is wrong other the the dash display? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

C1A20 pressure filling too slowly to tank.
It's been the same from the start. nearly 6 weeks they've been working on her to no avail. They've told me the system has no leaks what so ever, the pipes are perfect, the wiring is perfect, but yet the fault is still there.
I can start her up, have her sitting on the entry height (compressor not working) leave her ticking over and the fault will still come up on the dash after a minute or so?. The suspension isn't even activated and it's faulting!. I actually managed to get home from Airdrie last night without her faulting which is about 6 miles and a bit of a record!. I'm wondering if she needs a software update for the new compressor, they're Hitachi compressors that she's got, not the Wabco ones. The early Hitachi compressors had the faulty exhausts but the updated ones cured that problem. Could a software update be my problem?.
Cheers again.
