I've looked through the wiki to see the common issues and general issues to look out for when looking at L322s, and I've seen lots of discussions on here about the pros and cons of 5.0 SC and 4.4 TDV8. However, the question I still have is what sort of mileage can a 5.0 V8s handle?

There is a 5.0 SC for sale locally that seems reasonably priced, but has covered 150,000 miles. I know of the potential issues with timing chain guides and the supercharger snout/bearings, but is there anything else I should know about that would make this purchase a big risk?

I do about 10,000 miles a year, so would be looking at getting to 180,000 in three years - am I opening myself up to a world of pain? I see in the 'high mileage' thread there are a couple of 5.0 within this range, which makes me feel a bit more confident.

IMO the 5.0 SC starts off as a £100k + car and comes with £100k+ car running costs. As the car ages these running costs do not go down and the risks of getting an occasional huge bill go up. But its only a car and can be fixed. Go in with your eyes open and realistic expectations and you'll do your 10k miles a year in one of the nicest places to do such things. That's got to be worth more than Mondeo money, yet the initial investment will probably be less. After that its just down to luck mitigated by not avoiding the unnecessarily expensive maintenance. I've taken my latest from 60k to nearly 110k. Other than service items, so far just the aircon has given me grief - now fixed for £650 and lots of hassel. On current plans I'm keeping it for another 18 months so still plenty of time to get bitten but really unless it somehow writes itself off I'll consider it fair value for the significant amount of my life that I'll have spent in it. Mike - MPx

Big bills can happen with any car, and any model. Whether to buy or not entirely depends on the car, not the model in my opinion. And never ever rely on a description from the person who is selling.

I have a 4.2 now on 196k virtually no miles this year and I budget 3k a year for maintenance but then I do lots more miles
If you do the maintenance it will be fine they only bite back when either not used or the maintenance is skimped in my opinion

I have seen quite a few advertised for sale saying "new engine fitted"

I have also seen the Samcrac chronicles on YouTube.

So why do they die ?

Does the timing chain guide, if left, get worse to the point of catastrophe ?

Or is there another disease they suffer?

5.0S/C is the most reliable L322 ever made so sit back and relax....

GGDR, the timing chain gets so slack it jumps teeth, if it jumps 4 teeth the engine is toast... the problem is it's hard to hear the rattle from the drivers seat so people don't notice the noise until the big noise of conrods coming through the side of the block...!!! Pete

Forget 'location, location, location'.....instead go for.....'oil change, oil change, oil change'.
