327,700 Miles - My First Range Rover

Last Friday I took delivery of a 2010 TDV8 Autobiography with 327k on the clock. This vehicle came to my attention when it was featured in the September edition of Land Rover Monthly (which I only get because I also have a 1960 Series II SWB Land Rover).

So far, not a great start. - I had arranged for the car to be delivered to the local "Chips Away" repairs shop so I could get a quote to repair some of unsightly body work damage. Quote done, I set off to drive home but after a mile I noticed a sudden drop in power and a "Restricted Performance" error message on the dash! Sad

I pulled over and turned the car off for five minutes and on restarting the error message was still present, retrying had the same result. On calling the selling garage they arranged for the local independent Land Rover specialist to take a look but not until Tuesday.

I collected the car this morning and apparently the problem was a sticking throttle body linkage, although there was also an exhaust sensor error code.. They cleared the error log, lubricated the linkage and all seems ok now. Time will tell.

As the vehicle came with a three month warranty I intend to put some more miles on it just to see if there are any other issues. It now occurs to me that I might need to get a code reader, is there a particular one I should be looking for and if so where is the best place to buy it? 2010 Range Rover TDV8 Baltic Blue Autobiography (2011 MY) - SOLD Sad

Brilliant! Good luck with it.

IID tool is the diagnostics to get. Not cheap but by far the best.

May I be rude and ask how much it was?

Glad you started this thread, think a lot of people on here will be very interested in your journey.
As for the code reader, look on ‘for sale’ in this forum & you’ll see the Gap 11D tool which is what the majority of forum members seem to use.
I’ve just bought a ‘12 plate 4.4 so will be very interested in how you get on especially if you buy a Gap tool.
I know very little about these tool, in fact sod all, so best I look into them.

Keep the forum up to date please. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Fox889 & Philip1972, many thanks for confirming that the Gap IID tool is the one I need, any recommendations on suppliers?

Philip, regarding what I paid, let's just say a little bit less than the asking price of £8.5k. Whistle 2010 Range Rover TDV8 Baltic Blue Autobiography (2011 MY) - SOLD Sad

Has it had a good service record ? And did the car do many miles over the past year or two ? Lots of owners of just one careful??

Just curious & good luck! Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

Bill, not to reproduce the whole article from LRM, one owner from new to Nov 2018 then ownership moved to the garage that sold it to me.

Apparently the original owner went up to Glasgow once or twice a week from Buckinghamshire and hence racked up the mileage.

Full Land Rover service history until the Feb 2019 service which was done by a local Land Rover specialist (but not a LR dealership). Just 500 Miles since the Feb service. 2010 Range Rover TDV8 Baltic Blue Autobiography (2011 MY) - SOLD Sad

Quick update - The car failed again today "Restricted Performance" again. Sad

Back to the local independent Land Rover specialist and this time just one error message, the exhaust sensor again. So the car is booked in to get the sensor replaced, apparently not a fun job down in the bowels of the engine bay.

If the old sensor comes out without problems, the cost is about £380. But if the sensor snaps off in the exhaust manifold (not that uncommon) then a much bigger job. Really glad I am not paying for all this and that I have my 1960 SII as a backup vehicle!! 2010 Range Rover TDV8 Baltic Blue Autobiography (2011 MY) - SOLD Sad

I was sorely tempted by that car just to see how it fared with the mileage that it had covered as it had done over 300k more then ours.

How does the car drive? Is the gearbox still nice and smooth?

How bad was the unsightly bodywork damage?

Curiosity is killing me! Laughing

The exhaust (EGR) Sensor won't be causing the Restricted Performance. Yes it's pig of a job:

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic50202.html

Yes you should just get them to do it. Tell them to follow my guide Whistle Whistle Whistle and they won't snap it off in the manifold. Razz

There are quite a few common causes of Restricted Performance, you really need an IIDTool to read the codes. But if you've got the warranty, maybe not?

But then again Indy didn't nail it first time so maybe you should.

. Cheers, Greg

David, it drives well and the gearbox seems smooth enough, well for the 70 miles I have driven it so far! Laughing

Bodywork is fine from a distance, but there are number of minor scuffs and the bonnet has a lot of areas where the lacquer has worn off. The wheels are not in the best of shape and may not be economically sortable.

But for now I am not in a hurry to spend money on it until it runs better or at least for a week without dropping into limp home mode. Evil or Very Mad 2010 Range Rover TDV8 Baltic Blue Autobiography (2011 MY) - SOLD Sad

A Trap

Agree, get the GAP iiD tool, go for the Bluetooth model, you can then use your phone or tablet and not restricted to using a laptop.

My Disco 4 had restricted performance, and it was a sensor on the downpipe (cant remember exactly where).

It was a bit of a job for the garage as it did snap off, but he helicoiled it I think.

Dont know the cost, as the labour was free because he broke it when changing something else.
