Draining Oil FFRR 2012 4.4L TDV8

Hi folks

Just to be sure. I am about to change the oil of my 2012 FFRR 4.4L TDV8.

Is it correct the drain plug is located at a 'not so handy' location just above a subframe (see picture 1)?



Hence, an alternative way to drain the sump is to disconnect the tube plug as seen in picture 2?



Please confirm.

Documentation (other than on this forum) is limited available.

There is a pump oil pipe next to the oil filler. That is the best way. We all use a syphon or pump. Do a search on here for the various models used.

Indeed I see a lot of people using a pump. But isn't there a risk that pollution stays behind? How can a pump remove all oil from the sump?

By the way, I just successfully drained and replenished the oil by simply removing the tube. A bit messy Confused , but it did the job.

There will be some 'pollution' left behind but it will be diluted to a point where it's irrelevant, after all, you were running with a sump full of the polluted oil before the oil change. BMW i3 Electric Car

The first drain picture you posted is for the turbo drains. You should get very little out of it.
Second is for the sump itself. Expect over 9L.
Drain both.
Don't overfill with new oil. Well documented on here.
8.5L to start with.
I do an interim oil change using the vacuum option. Main service using the above 2 drain options Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

i change my oil so regularly i don't bother with the sump drain at all i just syphon it out. i change my oil 3 times a year regardless of mileage. When i change the oil it gets syphoned out at full temp too.

Just keep an eye on the seal on the bottom drain, as it’s only a push fit it’s not very tight. My 12my leaked at that joint, LR did replace the whole pipe under warranty but I think it’s a fairly big part not just the elbow.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have had B.B. seven years now and have sucked out the oil twice a year throughout.
More recently I have been logging the fuel dilution level with my iid, just to see the rate it gets contaminated at.
Unfortunately lockdowns have meant more very short runs and hence more chance of dilution, but the figure has never got much over 0.5 where the limit is 7.0.
Sucking it out eliminates the risk of leaks resulting from disturbing the drain tube.

Yep another vote for a vacuum suck twice a year and an oil and filter kit of the right stuff from Opie Oils. Very easy. I also add some fresh oil into the engine once it's emptied, let this work its way down, then remove that before refilling with new.

This Pela extractor works perfectly for me, you just need to rest it on a foot stool or bucket while sucking out the old oil. I clean it out after with some warm water and mild detergent and let fully dry:

It might be more expensive than others, but I've used it for 6 years without issue on a number of vehicles and it has different tube sizes for different pipes.

That Pela 650 only holds 6.5 Ltrs but, according to DrRob, the sump holds 9ltrs. Do you do the extraction in 2 lots?

Yep - two lots, and straight into 5 litre old oil bottles. Just release the pump vacuum pressure halfway through. You can count out the litres as you remove it.
