A plea to all members on your post title choice

Dear esteemed fellow FFRR fans,

We have built up quite a membership now and have thousands of posts with some great topics, hints, tips and helpful advice. Cool

Quite often someone new comes to the forum with a question that has been asked before and we tell them to search for it. This is fine and makes perfect sense, however if the topic they are looking for is not easy to find it's inevitable they will probably create a similar thread, or go away unhappy and unable to fix their issue in time. I know it won't always work as we planned but if we all started our threads with a meaningful title that talks to the content then when people are searching (you included) it's going to be easier to find.

For example, if I needed to find out information about faulty steering columns, do a search, which do you think is gooing to mean more to me...

1. Steering Column Fault: Any ideas?

2. Aaaarrggh! It's broken again!

Very Happy You get the point.

We all do it at times, I know I have, lets make this forum even better, it has a great reputation for the friendliness of the members and the degree of useful help we all have collectively.

I may from time to time tidy up a post title so that it has more meaning, so don't be surprised!

Thanks everyone

RRUK

I think I need some reassurance around the search function as I may be doing it wrong for example if I put in, as I did once, "Tailgate lock is loose" I get reams of stuff - most of it not related to loose tailgate locks.

Is it me ? Big Cry
Should I get my coat? Geoff

The key is to simplify your search and just put in "Tailgate", limit it to post titles and not contents also. Discovery 4 HSE

Thats the sort of help I needed - thanks.
I had assumed that the more specific you make the query i.e. including "Tailgate", "lock" and "loose" it would tighten it but it actually looks for all three words individually.

i did incidentally try "search" in the search before I posted because I'm scared of Stan Very Happy Geoff

On most forums I use, I find the search function is not quite as easy to use as google, then type in the problem area and add the forum name. (ie: Steering Column fullfatrr)

Out of interest, typing "Steering Column fullfatrr" into google gives the first result as Dan's post in the technical section of this very forum. Thumbs Up Job done.

True, you can actually use 'site:' as a Google modifier as well as the standard boolean operators and quotes etc.

Example site:http://www.fullfatrr.com "rubber mats" -ebay would search the site for anything with rubber mats in (exactly) but excluding anything with ebay in

Think the quotes approach and +/- also work in the Fullfatrr search too.

Anyhoo, good point Adam- I've also probably used some vague titles!
Thumbs Up
