I’ve had plenty of diesels well before DPF was invented. I’m not convinced at all that such soot dumping is normal. Naturally I haven’t seen what it is doing as there is no video. But from what you describe it shouldn’t do that. Unless perhaps the rest of the time you hardly use the throttle so it never clears its throat. Heck I drive mine like I stole it 🤣

Perhaps, it just needs a good clear out and will be ok?

Thumbs Up

Given I have the same answer from two trusted local garages, who have both seen in person, I think the conclusion is that neither are concerned and, it could be a number of things. I think the answer is to monitor, run some cleaners through the fuel and induction systems and run on premium diesel and just see if it clears up, remains the same or gets worse. If it gets worse then, I know it's something failing and it will need to go to a garage

It may resolve itself, if oil was making its way from the leaking rocker cover gaskets onto the injectors. Now that supply of oil has stopped, it may just need time to burn everything off (and be hot enough to do that).

I think the key is to do the obvious things first and monitor for a month or two.

Having read your posts re smoke, I was out today so took the opportunity to see if there was any comparison. Took the car up to 3500 rpm and not a trace of smoke.

I have regularly given it a "blast" to compensate for relatively slow speed motoring (speed limit here is 80kph/50mph) and never had any smoke. 2008 L322 on 120K no DPF.

I would say what you are experiencing is not normal.

Probably not helped you but I thought it might make a useful comparison.

As said above, running for a few weeks to see if it burns off any possible excess oil would be the way to go.

Good luck. Thumbs Up John

I'll run for 2 or 3 weeks, get some good motorway runs through it, fuel system cleaner, induction system clean / turbo clean and go from there.

I went to a Range Rover specialist earlier and he also said that's normal on a 3.6.

Would a Terraclean potentially be worth it?

In my opinion...excessive carbon build up in exhaust this is not based on the description. I mean, ok it may not have a DPF but it is still relatively modern turbo diesel technology.

A puff of smoke under load/acceleration would be more like one of or a combination of...

* incorrect timing
* over-fueling (incorrect timing?)
* injectors sticking open too long (incorrect timing?)
* incorrect air/fuel ratio

All possible signs of either mechanical problems or a bad engine map or tuning box...

But could be more mechanical as well like:

* worn injectors
* faulty turbo charger

right to low cylinder compression...

Either way it shouldn't be doing that. But you have driven it, don't know if you have experience with other 3.6 TDV8's as a comparison as you could 'feel' what it may be or hear it...

You know what, I'm beginning to think it's a remap.

Why?

1. There are absolutely zero other symptoms. She runs nice and smooth, no problems at any other revs, no noises, knocks, whines (except a standard bit of turbo noise), high pitched (I.e. manifold) etc. I gave it a good rev then, gave the soot a good sniff. Absolutely no smell of oil - that seems to be pure diesel soot to me.
2. It feels QUICK. I know it's a 3.6 but, it is only 270BHP pushing a 2.7 tonne box.
3. I drove my Mercedes C250 earlier. The Range Rover is definitely quicker than that. I would expect it to feel slightly slower.

Considering that seeing if the car has been remapped is likely to be a 'free' option, it might be worth looking at first, before I spend any money. What kit (a bit more detailed than just 'diagnostics') will a mechanic need to be able to tell?

In the meantime, I have thoroughly checked both top intercooler hoses and they are both in good condition, properly sealed and don't seem to be more than 3 or 4 years old.

I could not see the turbos or the two turbo boost pipes (the smaller ones). Has anyone got a photo to point them out to me so, I can trace them?

I have also checked the intake manifold. No leaks there either.

If you dont have any diag gear which you will more than likely have to have to get any idea of what is happening here id be doing the simple things you can easily do which may well be a cause like cleaning the air flow sensors and intake boost sesnors etc... easily done plenty of info on here about it

I dont think you can get to the wiring plugs for the injectors on these engines easily from memory... if you could isolate one at a time and see if the smoke goes away that would tell us something

You need a gap tool etc...

I think I may have an idea, as diagnostics showed no issues on the PCM after clearing old codes.

The ECT.

Please can someone tell me if when they start their 3.6 cold, the fan immediately comes on?

So, the mystery got solved.

After going down the fuel injection route and without spending any money, I spoke to a local injector specialist who then referred me onto a garage they use for retail work.

They basically tore up everyone else's investigations and started from scratch.

The cause was in fact the vacuum pump that runs the brakes. I have no idea how, amongst numerous potential causes they managed to come to the vacuum pump but, they then tested it and it was putting out 50% of what it should do. Apparently the vacuum pump also runs the engine mounts and the EGRs.

A second hand pump was £17.50, of which many are available in that price range on eBay. Brand new from a dealer was an eye watering £600 however, I managed to find a parts supplier with some end of shelf stock selling a brand new genuine Bosch one for £90 so, nabbed that.

700 miles later and the issue is very definitely resolved.

So, there you go. Another possible cause of soot to add to the list to check in future, if anyone else gets an issue. It could be as simple as a £20 vacuum pump that takes less than 2 hours to fit.

Nice one. Never saw issues like this on my 1981 Fiesta. There’s progress for you 🤣.
