2010 Autobiography, tow tongue fitment?

G'day all,

I have recently purchased a 2010 Autobiography and am dealing with some of the left-overs of the previous owner.

I am really confused about the rear tow hitch assembly and am hoping someone can shed some light.

I am in Australia so I believe the tow hitch assembly is a Hayman Reese job so it's quite recessed under the Rangie.

However to me it looks like the previous owner has done a grinder-job to access it (see photos), and even though I have now sourced the official Hayman Reese 21181 tow tongue it doesn't go in far enough to put the pin in.

Can any offer any photos of their towbar assembly or advice on what should have been done so I can correct this and get the towing sorted?

Part II of the towing would be to try and swap the 7-pin large round adapter for a 7-pin flat and tuck it up out the way - but that's for another day.

Thanks!

Looks a little high for the standard one and the neck is too short - neat installation job though Whistle

There’s a good pic of standard here

quite right, realised that....twas the silencers that put me off.

if you go on the Hayman Reese site their product catalogue doesn't cover an l322. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi, I can't identify your bar, but I hope this helps

Some photos of the bar on our 2011 model year and is the same unit as fitted as original, although ours is was purchased recently. You will see the bar sits below the bumper and replaces the parts assisting in holding the bumper (I think) and the recovery towing eye.

The swan neck holder remains in place, usually, but may be replaced with a ball hitch and tube. You will note there is no lower bolt fitted as in yours, the retaining bolts/pins being from the side. It may be that someone has done a lash up, as it appears there is a hole part way into your socket as in ours, but the length of the socket appears to be less than the Wesphalia. Links below to some info on originals.

Let me know if you would like further pics of the fitting locations, happy to do so. It may help in your quest for an answer.

cheers

Richard

Thanks fella's, yeah she's a real cowboy job all right Evil or Very Mad Not good at all. Hard to believe someone probably paid for that work - and yes she's definitely a L322, someone's done some work with the exhaust also Shocked

Thanks Richard for the photos and information, they're both extremely helpful Thumbs Up I'll dig around underneath a bit more and see if I can confirm she is Westfalia Neutral

That grinder job just sends shivers up and down my spine Big Cry If it is a westfalia, I'm guessing who installed it hadn't seen one before Confused

Glenn, when the L322 sales began in Oz, all came with factory fitted Westfalia tow bars. Mine did but I don't Know about your year though.

Is that the right bar or is your rear air dam different to mine?.

My towbar drops in the middle:

Edit, looking at your first pic, it appears yours does, too. Now why is yours different to Richard's and mine. Our model years span yours. I do note your exhaust is different to both Richard's and mine.

Glenn, look for this sticker on the RHS.

The towbar now has the towing eye, you can just make it out below the RH reflector.

I'll go and photograph/measure the gooseneck on mine..........

Here we are (for non-Aussie viewers, this is the standard style gooseneck in Oz. The P38A had the same style).

I see no reason not to remove a bit from the end, I have done that before with no ill effects. Can you see how far the hole is out, you should be able to mark it with a permanent marker. Mine is the exact same as the others in Aus.
One of my P38s (a 2002) never had a tow bar fitted when I purchased it. There was a hard plastic cover that needed to be removed and discarded before fitting the towbar. Maybe the L322 was the same and the installer tried to fit it back on over the bar? 2007 TDV8 VSE

Thanks Ron, that information and photos are very helpful Thumbs Up

That gooseneck you have is exactly the one that I sourced and isn't long enough to go straight in (not to mention the jigsaw action on the rear drop-down bumperette thingy)

Wayne I'm not sure which bit from the end you are referring to?

Glenn, I wonder if your towbar was removed and relocated to clear the modified exhausts?

As a matter of interest, does you car have the recovery loop on the RHS? It's part of the towbar assy. See my pic. Ron B. VK2OTC

You say the tongue does not go in far enough for the pin hole to line up ? Cut the require piece off the end of the tongue and the hole will go in further. 2007 TDV8 VSE
