Smoking Brakes

Got back from a short trip last night and noticed smoke coming from the Nearside Rear Brake.
Took it apart tonight and the Pistion is totally seized in the Caliper.
Haven’t had the Drivers side apart but I’m going to replace them as a pair anyway.
So guess what I’m doing tomorrow after a quick trip to the Motor Factors 😭😭😭😭

It seems to be happening to a lot of them. I’ve had my rear callipers replaced the other week. One day when I got back I felt like getting the fire extinguisher 🤣 they were so smoking hot. Sadly I left it to late so it was callipers, discs and pads doe me.

As you said, change the pair, good move. No idea this post will apply to you?
When working on brakes , carefully remove rubber piston sleeve, clean side of piston and all surfaces, then use a mix of Coppaslip or generic branded copper grease, dilute with a small quantity of hydraulic oil, ie brake / power steering oil ( Compatible with rubber seals, as some oils / lub oils will degrade some types of rubber. ) coat exposed area of piston etc, and refit rubber sleeve. I tend to keep cars for a long time and found this method helps to arrest corrosion and prevents seizure
Using a copper based grease as opposed to a molybdenum based grease,is best as copper based lubricants have better heat resistance. Adding a minute amount of oil reduces the viscosity of the mix and prevents it becoming like a paste. Molybdenum based lubricants tend to become quite viscous and have the opposite effect to that desired and collect particles of dirt.
Time consuming, but best of all a cost effective fix, nice and cheap, just like me. Thumbs Up

Apologies to some if I seem to be teaching 'Granny to suck eggs' but I realise that many on this site have no engineering background, so will not know standard tricks such as this. As for the members on here with no engineering background who tackle some very technical jobs on their fatty, hats off to you gentlemen, some of the oily bits still scare me! Bow down Bow down

Think mine need doing on my 53 plate v8. Nearside squeals like hell when reversing and even worse if I put the trailer on so decided to order pair of calipers tonight and new pads. Looked at cheapo parts and they want £350 for a pair of rear calipers

Remember, don't use copperslip on aluminium callipers, use the correct brake grease. Thumbs Up

IIRC the rear calliper seals will not come off without removing the pistons, so don't just pull them off without looking.. Thumbs Up Pete
