What's going on with used prices over there in the UK. Here in Australia, everyone seems to have gone mad, and used prices have rocketed, there is a 2012 4.4 tdv8 Autobiography up at A$98k about 54000 pounds and another 2012 Vogue well specked at A$78k, 43000 pounds. Both are nice with lowish miles but not that special. There is a 2005 td6 up for A$26k, 15000 pounds. Seems like any used 4x4 has shot up 35 to 40% in these mad times, some punters will get their fingers burnt once reason returns. 2007 TDV8 VSE

In absolute terms it is not that crazy compared to Australia as Australia always had high prices to begin with. But yes I bought my L322 5.0SC only last year in the UK as a cheap temporary run around and to clear the house of stuff before emigrating. A year on the car has more than doubled in value

This time last year I was considering buying a L406.

I found a nice 63 plate, FLRSH, 63,000 miles, ex demo with one later owner car being sold by a dealer with a good reputation. It was initially priced at £28,750 and came with a 6 month bolt on warranty. Over the next few months I watched it tick down in price until it hit £22,995. I phoned up to make a genuine sales enquiry only to discover it had sold an hour or so before my call.

Since then I have watched prices rise back up in a rapid manner. A like for like vehicle will now be advertised for around £30,000.

I personally don’t think that the current high prices are sustainable as folk I know are loosing their jobs left right and centre. Many manufacturers are offering fantastic deals along with 0% finance and, I am told, that there are rumblings within LR dealerships suggesting that LR may offer a period of 0% finance in the coming months.

One of my theories as to the inflated prices of used cars is that many of the car auction houses have closed their doors to private and hobby buyers. Maybe this has reduced the number of cheap cars available?

Surely your issue is being in WA and the Covid pandemic.

I think it's due to the border closures that no cars are coming over from the Eastern State, leading to a shortage in WA driving up prices.

I bought a brand new D3 in 2005/6 in Perth and the price was comparable to a UK car at the excahnge rate of the time. I think I paid $80K for it.

Although in WA I have been looking Australia-wide for the past 18 months for a 2012 TDV8 with a A$45k limit, I am fussy, have missed a few and turned down a few all-around or below A$40k. They are reasonably rare but now used prices have all but doubled on prices a year ago. I can't believe anyone would pay these prices given new cars are still the same price or less. According to the Bank of England Britons have paid of an enormous amount of debt and saved a colossal amount of cash, when the brakes come of its going to be quite a bounce. I would expect used car prices to be strong for a while yet

Yes Absolutely me, the good old days of AULRO before all the trips and local groups got banned. I still get out and about but mostly on my own. That Classic was a great car and took me all over WA on some gnarly and remote tracks., Sold it to Mike the guy with the mint, Metalic green soft dash not long after that photo, had a few P38`s again well used in the bush, and now have a TD6. Still do all my own maintenance and repairs, never once having to resort to a garage. Looking to do a trip soon to Onslow and its surroundings.

At scotsjon, yup there is going to be a huge divide. As per the Bank of England we cleared everything but a small remainder of our mortgage. We did the same back in 2008 when there was another financial crisis. I find that financially prudent, I don’t mind borrowing but had to be good debt, debt that can be serviced quickly and isn’t structural to our finances. And when events like these happen it helps to be prepared so to come out and take advantage of the markets.

But I’m not so sure this time around how large that group is. I mean even where I live currently and tried to get a community fibre broadband initiative off the ground I see a lot of people responding with an undertone of being concerned about the costs bar those of use continuing to work from home.

I’m always interested in toys and find it’s not just second hand but also interesting new or lease deals are thin on the ground. I missed out on a few BMW M2s and saw the price rising on a week by week basis of what was available. Also not helped by EVO making it their car of the year and BMW stopped making them. And then there is the Brexit effect on top of it as well here in the UK.

But yes I agree, desirable versions with good provenance will keep their second hand value for a while. Especially so for petrol ULEZ compliant models. Currently the same is happening for the diesel versions, but I suspect their are at the top of their value and will lose a lot. But I’ve got limited sympathy for such buyers as this was on the cards for a long time. And I really find it astonishing that there are those who still buy diesels new. Crazy in my opinion.

I think they’ve gone up too. Just about to sell my daughters polo and looked around for a comparison price. Never realised she might get more than I thought

D3Jon, Not sure what happened with AULRO but it died a death regarding local groups and trips. Another group started up called W4 who are still going but all too organized for me. Another thing that got my back up was you had to pay to contribute so after 1550 post, mostly helping others and doing job write-ups I had to pay for the privilege, was not the money just the principle, sad really as the add-hoc trips through AULRO WA group were always great.
