Need new Alternator

Hi Guys,

its been a while since I have been on as I have been enjoying my tdv8 for the last year. came out a couple of weeks a go to an error message about insufficient charge on the dash. change the battery and it was fine for 2 days then got it again. took it to my local garage who has an ex Landrover guy who proceeds to tell me its the alternator. just been quoted £1400 to change it.

I wasn't expect it to be that expensive as the alternator is 250 for a genuine part. does it really take that long to change an alternator? All comments welcomed.

A Trap

That’s ridiculously expensive for an alternator replacement - doesn’t matter what ff model you have.

£200 will by you a good new replacement and approx 4 hours to do it yourself or Labour to pay.

Budget for a new belt and new idler and tensioner pulleys at £150- May as well do these while you are there, they take only an additional 15 minutes to change. 👍

That does sound rather expensive, They’re not the easiest job in the world, especially if your not a mechanic, but I would expect somewhere circa half the price you were quoted from a good Indy. If he’s an ex LR mechanic, the manual does suggest removing the turbo to gain access on the 3.6, a horrible task in itself, but they can be done by taking various pipe work off around the front of the engine instead and they will wiggle out through the front, there’s a good how to in the wiki.
Hope you get sorted Thumbs Up

I had ours done at an good ex BMW garage in Cambrdgeshire. Charged book time at 4 hours labour, can't find receipt, but IIRC was about £85/hr. Oh, and it took them 6 Smile

Agree with others, he's trying it on and do the belts and idlers as ur20v says. Cheers

Had mine replaced (4.4tdv8) in March for £625 parts and labour.
That was based on the labour calc from the warranty company and the garage did say it took way longer.
Also did not include a new belt as we were just going into the first lockdown and the part was on back order. 2012 RR Westminster TDV8

I've been "lucky" enough to have done mine twice (first replacement seized), There is a good write up that I contributed to, so try and follow that and it shouldn't be too bad. It's just a shame it didn't fail in the summer, as it can get a bit chilly working outside in this weather.

Shame we're in lockdown, as I'm just up the M77 from you and could have lent you a hand. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Mine (BMW M62 4.4V8) failed last year. List price for the alternator (aftermarket, not through a dealer) was a little over A$3,000.

I got it at a discount and fitted it myself. Ron B. VK2OTC
