Scraping sounds

Hi all

It's not something that really bothered me but it's something I want to get sorted at some point but I've always had a scraping sound coming from the rear of the car. It's a 2003 v8, but It mostly happens when I reverse for some reason. Am I right in assuming it's more then likely to be the back plates as it never seems to do it whilst driving forward.

What's the options too sort this? Previous cars I've just lost the back plate if I'm honest and never replaced them

my guess would be handbrake shoe retaining pin snapped/rusted away - that can give those noises

Check for small cars, and, shopping trollies.

These can all make such a sound when a FFRR is reversing!

Seconded, the back plates rust easily and the retaining pins drop into the handbrake drum.

Deep joy so I'm guessing that's new rear plates and handbrake fitting kit I'll need

Possibly, or it could be that you just need to drive forwards 100 yds with the handbrake applied to clear rust from the inside of the drums - give it a go! Thumbs Up

You have to take the rear hubs off to change the back plates and that is a massive job on a car that age, the driveshaft will be in there for good (just about)

If you need a new back plate (they hold the hand break shoes in place so you can't just cut them off) buy new, they aren't a lot and cut them in two, weld/rivet a lip on one side and make them bolt or rivet back together once fitted... so much easier than removing the hub... You need to look at the old one to decide the best place to cut them in half, I did it on my 2002 and it worked well... Thumbs Up Pete
