A guy I vaguely know was chatting about his e39 540 supercharged

Ironically it’s like a mashup between the 4.4 and 4.2 Range Rover...

Anyway he pointed me to this video as I was moaning you could barely hear it in or out of the ff



He also doesn’t have the armadillo looking tube that runs along the top he has a pipe with a constant bore all the way to the back with a cone on it.

I’m trying to work out a) if the 4.2 will sound similar with this mod and b) if I need to get rid of the armadillo and get a single
Piece made all the way to the elbow or if the armadillo wouldn’t make much difference

What do you guys reckon?

If my understanding is correct, I might be wrong. That bmw is using a twin screw supercharger back the more efficient centrifugal superchargers on the Jaguar engines. The twin screw is louder though. It would be nice to have more whine but I don’t fancy messing about with it.

On the Jaguar XFR using the 5.0 engine, people remove the stock air boxes and fit cone filters and the noise is massively increased. Not sure if it makes much difference on the 4.2 though.

Much as I like a good engine noise, that one sounds more like there’s something wrong with it so isn’t a pleasant noise to my ears... sounds a bit like old cars used to when you drove in reverse gear.

Think I’ll leave mine as it is.

Dan, yes, that one sounds more pleasing... a bit like a louder version of mine.

Think it’s because there’s some underlying engine noise coming through... on the video of the BMW, I could only hear a whine...

Not sure about the supercharger on it, but have always fancied an E39 540. Had a 530d was one of the best cars I’ve had, until the chocolate gearbox started making horrid noises when towing..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
