Petrol, Diesel or Hybrid

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I am thinking of changing my 2018 SE.

Whatever make I buy it's the same question, petrol or diesel or Hybrid. I do about 12k miles per annum, mostly lanes and A & B roads. Plus off road when doing my country sports. What does anyone think?[/list] All LR cars from 1984

I had the same question in my mind just under a year ago when looking for a MY18-19 car and the SDV8 was what I ended up with and I wouldn't change that decision.

Hybrid - Boot space was limited, didn't want to sacrifice the AB to get some back and tried a RR Sport. Some positives (step off, silent running), but I didn't think the 2 power units were very well (smoothly) integrated and I didn't like the noise the petrol engine made all that much

Petrol - V8s sound great, but they are harder to find used, despite a bigger tank I though the range would be sub 400 miles which would really annoy me and having driven a few 'performance SUVs', the SDV8 is as quick as I want one to be.

Diesel - Tried both the V6 and V8 and preferred the latter, mainly due to the better body control / less roll, but I also like the way it sounds / goes and it does feel a fair bit quicker. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

If buying new, I'd go for the D350 to get Dynamic Response, but I'd also be looking to see if there were any good deals on pre-reg SDV8 ABs. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

Tank range on the 5.0SC is not THAT bad, pre lockdown mine tended to show over 450 miles when filled up, more like 420 now with the only permitted journeys being shorter. If you do lots of stop start traffic it will be worse, but that sort of driving would not suit a diesel either, the DPF would get clogged. I'm happy with mine, glad not to have the faff of diesel/AdBlue and the refinement and performance are worth the extra cost for me.

Fair point above re the new model coming. I'm a bit wary of the rumoured BMW 4.4 twin turbo engine. The only RR I have had which got engine problems was the 4.4 petrol BMW engine in my first 322, and my BMW motorcycle has had problems too, so there might be a case for having one of the last of the 5.0SCs, which I regard as quite a robust unit.

With "country sports" consider getting some 20" wheels as seasonal spares, I have that with Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R20. The 5.0SC power delivery is probably inferior to the diesels off road, but perfectly fine for normal tracks and fields. The traction control seems to come in sooner, one sometimes has to go in the opposite direction (i.e. back or forwards) and then go again. If you want to drive on grouse moors don't get 22" wheels, tyre/rim damage may well result. Only Range Rovers since 1988

And the good news is the 2018 facelift 3.0 Ltr TDV6 Vogue SE has now gone up in value for the past 3 months!! It went up £800 in Feb from January according to the Glass Guide Thumbs Up The V8 hasn't, so why do you suppose that is? All LR cars from 1984

Chalky, you sound like an EU6 diesel buyer. And if you’re doing that then surely you need to go all in and get SDV8.

That said, if money is literally no object, I’d go P400e. You’ll get worse economy but it’s super lively, and makes you feel 15 years younger. It’s like driving a giant roly poly hot hatch. What price can you put on that? L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Yes Ilard, my car is a 2018 facelift 3Ltr TDV6. As I posted, I don't really understand why its value has gone up since December. Maybe it's a lack of secondhand cars or that people who want a diesel feel the TDV6 is less of an "environmental no-no" than the V8???

I'm waiting for the dealers to open so I can test drive a 3ltr petrol. Not going to wait for the new car in October(?) as my experiences of buying a new one from launch like I did in 2018 have put me off that for good! All LR cars from 1984
