5.0 Supercharged - why the stick?

I'd like to switch to a 5.0 L322 due to evil ULEZ.

Fine but one thing that I couldn't go back to is the stick shifter. Which was introduced on the 5.0 L405 but I think this has the 8-speed.

I know the 5.0 L322 has the ZF 6-speed, not the 8-speed so I thought that was the reason why the stick is not fitted.

Until I saw a Jag XJ 5.0 which had the rotary dial and it has the 6-speed box apparently. So they do go together.

So I wonder could the rotary shifter be modded into a 5.0 L322 ??

. Cheers, Greg

Some would have liked the stick retained for the 8speed. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

There are both 'M' and 'E' versions of the ZF6HP boxes, 'E' versions using 'shift-by-wire' rather than a conventional cable; so they can have gear selection by button, rotary, electronic stick, paddles, etc.

Totally different mechatronics units, gearbox control units, shift strategy software, mechanical parking brake engagement method, etc.

*HUGE* amount of work to retrofit 'E' to 'M' cars. Can be done, but not really worthwhile if the reason for doing it is just not being a fan of the stick.

I'll dig around Smile

Yeah, 'E' version boxes were fitted to a lot of BMW models and I believe some Audi, Lexus models as well - and probably many others. They're all controlled via CANBus commands rather than electronic switching and a park-brake cable. The mechatronics units have an additional solenoid for Park selection, and the pressure pathways can differ as can the spring specifications for some of the valving.

It's important to note that *none* of the 6HP transmissions have an old-fashioned P,R,N,D,1,2,3 cable-operated gear selector; rather, the operating mode is selected by a combination of electronic switching from the manufacturer's chosen operating method (stick, etc) with a manual 'P' selection via traditional cable. The 'E' versions of the transmission replaced that traditional cable with a solenoid operated parking brake mechanism, but also reduced the number of active electrical connections that can be used for gearbox signalling; such that all the signalling including things like shift-locking, ignition interlock and manual shift demands are done by CANbus messaging.

The 6HP26 was definitely fitted to Jaguar models, although I'm not sure which ones.

Some interesting documentation in the PDF I've shared here:
