Guys, its my 40th next Feb and I'm toying with the family getting away for the week.

I'm toying with Scotland or Switzerland. I would like to be somewhere snowy (is this a cert in Scotland in Feb?)but with plenty of things to do other than skiing. Neither me or the wife Ski but I love the snow. The two older kids have had a dabble at Skiing and youngest will be 4 so to young really to get on the sloaps.

I'm really looking for some recommendations for places such as lodges which would have breath taking scenary without breaking the bank, and like I said.. other stuff to do.. such as sight seeing shopping and activities.

I would even consider taking the caravan for some hardcore winter caravanning, I like a little adventure, so suggestions welcome please. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

If you want to take the 'van then I would stick to Scotland, personally I love Fort William. It's a little "touristy" as you're at the foot of Ben Nevis, but you can get up to all sorts there.

However, I wouldnt like to garuntee snow. The first time I went at the end of Jan for my birthday there was all the snow. Two years later there was nothing but blue skies.

With somewhere like Switzerland you're pretty much garunteed the white stuff - however, I wouldnt take the 'van there as the extra fuel cost and crossing cost would I imagine be prohibitive? I've never towed in the snow, so would be concerned about that myself, but if you've experience towing in possible deep snow then it's probably less of an issue for you.

Dolphinboy went for a snowy eurotrip recently, it might be worth dropping him a PM to see if he has any reccomendations.

I'm sure it'll be a blast whichever destination you choose. 

The way the climate has been of late, there's been a lot of snow in Scotland, but the investment in infrastructure in Scotland compared to Switzerland to support wintersports isn't comparable!

I'm sure that with the exception of maybe Aviemore and Fort William, there aren't many places that would compare to the ski resorts of Switzerland, Austria, Italy etc etc.

You mental Switzerland for sure if you want snow Scotland for rain rain

SWITZERLAND - we go in our 28ft Motorhome to Davos, Saas Fee, Zermatt and many other Euro resorts no problemo.....

Ok.. I guess it'll be a trip on the Ferry if we do Switzerland.. and much as I'd like to take the caravan.. thinking logically it'll probably be a none starter as this will be a short break.. probably a week at most including travel.

I guess Scotland can be equally scenic with stuff to do even without the Snow. Only time I've been was to the G8 and that was hours stuck in a van at a multitude of Laybyes then rushing 50 miles to end up in another laybye Never really got to appreciate the scenary.. or even undersatand where we even were half the time! Only other visit was to Dumfries and that was a fleeting dip of the toe in to Scotland just so we could add it to the countries that we had visited that year. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

Why Switzerland if you are on a tight budget?
I can recommend a lovely French resort with lots to do other than skiing with lots of caravan sites,its called Samoens and is a great low cost base where you can drive to some other local resorts. Banished back to RRS for the moment !!!

Good point. I guess I defaulted to Switzerland as we went there a couple of summers back and took the train to the top of the Jungfrau. It was quite an experience for us and the kids to be stood on a Glacier when only hours earlier we had been down the mountain with no snow.

I'll take a look at that site as we're always looking for alternatives to what is becoming the default holiday destinations with the tourer.. purely through finding sites we like within sensible distance of the autoroutes keeping in mind we move on every few days until we reach the main site. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS
