UPDATED: Newer Vs. Older display screen differences?

UPDATE: January 15, 2021 (yes, the date is in the USA format).

It turns out the flickering of the display is caused by a defective navigation DVD drive.

One clue that the display was fine was when it started and displayed the "Land Rover" logo it did not flicker at all. It only started the flickering once it got past that screen.

ORIGINAL POST:
Hi Everyone,

When I bought my '09 L322 just about a month ago one issue was the radio/navigation screen was continuously flickering. I've been working with the dealer to get this fixed and they are looking at a few different shops here in the USA to rebuild it.

That's great and the dealer has been doing as much as I could hope. But, this will also mean that for the time that it's out I won't have any radio at all.

I was thinking I could buy a used one off of eBay but most look very similar but not exactly the same as mine. Most have icons on the six buttons (three on each side) and mine has the text on each button ("SETUP," "TRIP," etc.).

The older style is on top and the newer (like in mine) is on the bottom of this photo.

Does anyone know if I buy a used unit that has the icons but otherwise looks the same, will it work? The ones with the text on the buttons are not as common and also have a higher price.

Thanks!

I swapped from the older style to newer as my back light used to play up
unit was just a plug and play
plus the front is held on by about 8 screws so you should be able to swap keys to keep style you want

Martin,

Thanks for the info! Very helpful.

I checked eBay this morning and found one out of a wrecked RR that has the same text on the buttons at a very fair price! I sent an offer to the seller and will almost certainly buy this.

The dealership where I purchased the RR is working to find a good repair shop for my current unit with the flickering display. This way I'll have something to use during the repair. Once I get my unit back, I can then sell this on eBay as a verified working unit! Total win-win.

Thanks again!

I don't know either Embarassed.

When I got the e-mail notification of a reply the bottom of the message said:

In my sleep deprived state I mistakenly figured that was the person who replied to me when in fact it was jordon0.

Sorry about any confusion I may have caused!

Why don’t you get them to just pay for and fit the unit you’ve just bought/buying?

I’d rather have that than a unit someone had took apart and fiddled with....

Just my 2p....

The repair places have a pretty good reputation for getting it right (AFAIK).

Who knows, maybe the one I'm buying on eBay is in even worse condition than my current one?

I suspect that the repair on my existing one will work out just fine. I guess we'll know in the end.

As long as it works in the end.... the end justifies the means, and all that.

Are you sure the flickering is the screen itself? Has all the wiring and electrical components in the boot been checked?

I haven't checked anything. The dealer says that this is certainly the problem and they are paying. I would hope that a dealership would have a better idea if some other component could be causing this issue.

I've actually told them that the reason I wouldn't take a cash offer for me to fix it myself is that very reason. If I send the display out for repair and it turns out that isn't the issue, I would be stuck. I'm leaving it to them to determine the cause and to then fix the correct component.

If I was spending my own money, I would do lots of diagnostics to try to narrow it down to one particular component.

Thanks,
