Scissor lift

So building an extension on side of garage (second retirement pressie after l322) . Restricted by boundary to 3 m internal width but 8m long and using purlins rathe then preformed trusses to give headroom inside.

Looking at lifts and width restricts two/four post lifts so considering scissor lifts. Anybody got any experience/recommendations?

Will be linked to existing double garage by taking out a 1.8 m window. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

A Trap

Your garage extension isn’t going to be big enough. 3m is only just wide enough to open each door about 1/2 way when the Range Rover is centralized. There will not be much room to work on the sides. 8m length is plenty and still have room for a bench and or tool chest.

If you want to detail your car and work on the suspension and brakes then a scissor lift works well as it keeps the doors clear and wheels free.

A two post lift is the most useful if you want to services everything under and around the car. There are some fully in ground 2 posts that are totally mounted underground and only the arms come up on two posts under the car, these are very expensive as they are for main dealer and professional workshops but allow the most room around the car and still access everything underneath.

Normal 2 post lifts will need approx 6m as the lifts are 3.5m in width for the towers and legally you are supposed to have 1M walking clearance around the towers.

Note for the Range Rover you really need a 5 tonne lift or better, the 2.5,3 or 4 tonne lifts may have the capacity but when you are working on the car the arms flex a lot on the lighter lifts and can move letting the car move and possible fall off!

Do you have enough height in your double garage for the lift?

V8 Bob,
I have just moved to a new house and my garage is 3260mm wide, so thought this picture might give you an idea of fit.
The car is dead central in the garage, so the same clearance on both sides.

Appreciate constraints width wise but ideally fact most scissor lifts are portable I can position one to use added width of connection to existing garage. The existing garage is much wider at 5m with a ceiling height of 2.6 m so lift could be used in there as well.

Question is has anyone experience of using one with a Range Rover or other “heavy” Land Rover type vehicle? 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

A Trap

Ok, and yes. On the lighter SWL ramps like ~2.5 and 3 tonne which can lift the Range Rover it’s scary. Very wobbly if you are pushing and pulling on anything, this goes for scissor and two post lifts. Just feels like the car will fall off at any moment especially the scissor lifts that are mobile and not fixed to the ground.

Leave mobile lifts for a focus type car and low lift heights at ~1M. Any higher 😱

The heavier 5+tonnes SWL lifts are much more stout and secure. I am still not a fan of scissor lifts but understand your constraints

Try and find someone who will let you try a lift before buying as you don’t have previous experience to call on. You will soon find out how scary the mobile and scissor lifts are... it will stop you wanting to use it!

You never said what you actually want to do with the lift?

With a 2.6m ceiling height you can only lift the Range Rover ff up 50cm which will only just take the load off the tyres to allow you to remove your wheels.... you need approx. 4m ceiling height to make working under neath comfortably and 3.5m to work on the brakes and suspension.

I would suggest a couple of decent air jacks would be cheaper and more useful.

Thanks for that. Lifting a Range River wouldn’t be main use although would be nice to be able to have something to provide a safe and steady lift to do brakes etc. Main use would be a project car as yet undecided on whether to scratch a long time itch to build a lotus 7 type car or to build a car for auto tests.

Hadn’t considered air jacks so will investigate further maybe another pair of strong axle stands and two air jacks to complement my existing equipment. Agree your views on two post lifts they worry me from a balance point of view.... any other ideas appreciated. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

A Trap

For a kit car build a portable scissor lift would be ideal especially for a lotus 7 type like Westfield or Caterham etc, they are flat underneath and everything runs inside or down the sides so would work well for building and maintenance this type of car.

Get something that can lift to approx 1.5m and two tonnes SWL will be plenty

Get the air jacks for the ff, they are quick.

It’s all in the detail.

I,ve just bought a quickjack lift(genesisequipment.com.au) for my rangie,as I dont have the firm(cement) floor( I have pavers as the sewege pipe runs underneath).
Its supposed to lift the rangie no probs.

Have a look for something similar in pommyland or Europe,as I would imagine the cost would be $$$$$$$ to send over.

cheers
