2011 4.4 tdv8 - advice on buying

Hi

I have been looking for a couple of months and just put a deposit down on a 2011, tdv8 vogue se, blue with a black interior, I have been reading the posts on the forum and asked some specific questions etc but now I have actually found what might be the “one”

It’s just rolled over on 100k miles, it has a stamped service history, it’s reported to have had a gear box flush and the oil cooler replaced - I have asked for evidence for these works on the visual inspection and drive tomorrow - I have found this post so will be reading this closely https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post189410.html#189410

But after any specific advice what should I look for to assure it’s the specification quoted, what to look for (make sure I push it over 2.5k on the test drive and look for smoke etc)

Normally I would have seen a lot of them, and driven a few with Covid however it’s not to be, I have driven a 4.4, 4.2 petrols but a while ago so not feeling quite as prepared as I would like

I have a MY11 4.4
Had it since new
Near faultless.
Rides like new.
Done its depreciation
Won’t be getting rid of in a hurry unless it has a catastrophic problem
My secret? I give it a regular Italian tune up.

I wouldn’t worry too much if it throws some crap out when you first boot it, as prob sat about and done short journeys perhaps.... but should be clear once it’s had a blow through.....

Thanks for the reply’s, on getting the newer model there is a HUGE price difference.... I would prefer to be buying in the middle of a market (and Millage) rather than bottom feeding high mile trucks

Kind of glad there are not loads of comments, there are a lot of these trucks out there .... buy with my eyes and make sure I know what I am getting into, fixing can be complicated and expensive but as with anything Land Rover you need to be aware that it’s not going to be a buy and forget purchase

It’s a missrable day to go and see a car though, 😢

My advice:

Low number of owners (dogs change hands a lot)
FSH, doesn't have to be MD, respected indy probably better
Good MOT history, gives an indication of how it's been looked after
Check for corrosion on lower tailgate and rear wheel arch lips inside rear door shut and where arch meets sill.
Premium tyres, matching all round with good tread depth left.

If all the above check out and it's obviously in good condition visually, it's most likely a goodun! Drives:

Well I went for it, a few to many owners but the last one did a lot of preventive maintenance, and it presented well with everything working, local independent quality used for the harder work (oil cooler etc)

See if I live to regret it, a lovely vogue Se is now on the drive

Nice work. The 4.4 TDV8 combined with the 8 speed box make a cracking car. May you have many happy miles in her.

Been there with my other land rovers! Though I don’t think many know what my stage 1 is!

I also have a Subaru Outback (not sure if it’s going) and main dealers have actually been very good given the diesel in its very unusual

Definitely been reading up on this page already, great information

Rust, believe it or not, is a problem with the later L322's [Tata ownership = cheap steel] as others have said, tailgate, rear arches & if you look inside the rear doors towards the black plastic sill cover, any rust problems will be creeping up from said area.
2500 rpm to 3000rpm should give you an indication of the turbo drain situation.
Tyres are always a good giveaway regarding maintenance levels I think, I've seen loads for sale on Manheim & BCA's sites with 'budget' under tyre type. Apologies to any member who puts budget tyres on their RR Embarassed
If you can, lay on your back & look under the car, near to the exhaust/gearbox area, any signs of oil dripping 'could' be the oil cooler [had mine done] not silly expensive but needs doing.
These 4.4's are gorgeous & don't be put off if you need to spend a few shillings on one, they really are worth it.
Go with your gut feeling, normally that works well Very Happy 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Thanks, I was aware of the rust issue, this is solid but a tinny amount just on the edges so I need to think about some
Wax though ideally given the amount of plastic around it something thinner so it creeps in more??

The Truck was spotless, but cleaned within an inch of its life, pervious owner was the dad of one of the workshop staff and it’s had the oil cooler done at a good local independent (where I will most likely go for specific work) along with the gearbox flush etc, though I do some myself if I was fussy (and I am) the rear disks need swapping but I will see if they clean up a little as I use it

It’s on 20s though personally I would prefer more sidewall and I will want to swap to more capable Rubber it will get some light off-road work with me and use in the snow when I can get back onto Scotland for some climbing, I also need to fit some roof bars, though I am not sure it will be my kayaking waggon as it’s tall

Cheers
