Indicator stalk not self-canceling

I'm having this little nuisance problem. No big deal but I'm just curious.
Ever since I bought the car there was a slight clacking noise every time I turned the wheel. But everything worked normally.
After a few days I noticed that the sound was gone but indicators would not self-cancel.
Just as I was beginning to look into having the stalk replaced, almost as if by magic, the clacking returned along with self-canceling.
Over the past 11 months, there were one or two occasions where canceling was lost but eventually recovered by carefully positioning the stalk according to the wheel position.
Since I don't really fancy taking the wheel column apart for this and could probably live with either the clacking (as nuts as this sounds, it has become sort of a feature of acoustically knowing the wheel position) or the manual canceling, I wonder if anyone knows of any tricks for a quick fix.
