Up a size?

Hi

That dreaded time has come for a new set of tyres for the front Big Cry again Big Cry 4 years old 28k miles and now the 3rd set of tyres Big Cry

they are 275/40 22's Conti LX sport

Can i change them to a 275/50? to give that extra bit cushion? i find these very harsh on our lovely roads Rolling with laughter 2010 defender utility

Just from what I have read , 40 is the biggest you can go but 285 40 22 fits fine 2015 4.4 AB

That’s quite a lot of tyres over a short period, have you had the tracking done?

Plenty of options for extra rubber, but it means smaller wheels.

However, you can often pick up sets of wheels & tyres for not much more than the cost of the tyres - and once you've sold your old wheels, can even be up on the deal.

ive had the tracking done and it was not far off tbh, always the outside edge that wears the rest of the tyre has lots more tread Shocked

A 285 will give a bit more side wall Very Happy only changing the fronts for now would this be an issue having a slightly larger on the front?

ive though about going down a size but my wheels are in really good order and look nice, something to think about

thanks for the replies

Just sounds like you drive it like Alistair and me....like a sports car....lol

I often get the wear on the outers....and I have read you shouldnbt swap them back to front....but I do.....and I was thinking of a set of 21's also as the ride quality is quite softer but the double twos just look better......lots of ebay tbh! all smug in my new plug!

not really its just wider.....still needs to be same size as rear......unless you change all 4.....

I think you'll need to go down to 21's if you want a 45 or more profile.....

I had been told in the past that the profile is kinda predetermined and needs to match the wheel size diameter...not so much the rim width....as Craig has 285 I think on his 23" but Khan suggest 305....so its obviously ok to alter the width a bit but diameter not so much.

Keen to see what you do.....I'm kinda there too.... all smug in my new plug!

A 285 40 22 will give you a 4mm taller side wall over a 275 40 22 side wall. Obviously not huge but an increase none the less. Smaller wheels are an option if you are happy with the aesthetics and the handling. Personally I prefer the look of 22s and the more positive feel handling wise but each to their own in both departments. 2015 4.4 AB

If memory serves me right the sidewall is calculated as a percentage of the tyre width?
Ie 285 40 the sidewall size is 40% of 285mm = 114mm
Ie 275 40 the sidewall size is 40% of 275mm = 110mm

The 285 part of the 285 40 22 is the width in millimeters the 30 is the aspect ratio ( percentage ) of that width and the 22 is the diameter, so a 275 40 22 tyre would be 275 mm wide with a 110 mm sidewall and a rim size of 22 inch. A 285 40 22 would be 285 wide with a 114 mm sidewall and a rim size of 22. 2015 4.4 AB
