4.2 06 SUPERCHARGED RR DIED

Sorry not really sure which forum I should post in so mods pls move as appropriate.
The fuel guage was it seems not working ie it showed over a quarter of a tank but it was basically empty and as a result the car stopped through lack of fuel . The garage are testing both fuel pumps either side of the transmission tunnel as they think the reguulator is not divinding the fuel between the two tanks?

Does this make sense? I am trying to geta handle on likely costs and was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem?

I believe there are two pumps, one in the tank, and another high pressure one further forward, the one in the tank seems to be prone to failure. I think if the car is run frequently at less than 1/4 tank full, it's prone to overheating, though it's probably due to fail with age now anyway.

Not sure on parts/ labour cost, but I wouldn't expect it to be too much. Maybe £100 for the pump, and probably just an hour would be my guess! Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Was it showing any symptoms before dying Bruce? i.e. any erratic behaviour or power loss? Mine did once, I put some juice in and it was fine again, and it happened to somebody else on the forum too. Always seems to be with just under quarter of a tank left. Was the same on my 530d when the pump failed on that.

Hope it works out OK (i.e. not too expensive!).

Looks like it should cost £300 plus an hours labour. I'm surprised that the pump costs so much, but then it's not just a pump!

You VERY probably have a dodgy fuel pump as those are the exact 4.2 SC symptoms I suffered and Dan suffered when the fuel pump cannot "Jet" fuel from one side of the bottom of the tank to the other! Normally happens with about 65 miles to empty indicated.....

You have fuel in the right side of tank but pump can use it.

The error codes are as above.......

You need a new pump so buy one fron Dan at Duckworths and get it fitted at an Indy. Total cost about £400 but TOTAL fix.

PS: It a very common problem on the SC but seemingly not on other models.

Am guessing it happens on the S/C as the pump can't keep up with the fuel demand from the engine Wink .

You have two pumps in your tank, one is the main sender (supplies your engine and fuel gauge) the other one (smaller one) equalises the fuel on either side of the tank...

Think of it like saddle bags on a horse, the small pump is meant to keep the fuel equal on both sides of the tank and when it fails you end up with a 1/4 tank on one side and nothing on the other...

Sometimes it makes sense to check the visual condition and change the lot (both pumps and pipes as a unit) if your keeping the car long term... If you can, check what crap is in the bottom of your tank when they are being changed. They dont like being run on cheap crappy fuel! Tesco's, Asda etc etc may be a little cheaper day to day but i liken their fuel to junk food. The supermarkets tend to buy fuel from anywhere and everywhere and believe it or not the bottom of the suppliers tanks are a cheaper purchase for them and offen mixed into theirs... Therefore the cheaper day to day fill ups cost you in the end with poor economy and mechanical failures...

Its not just the SC that suffers with these pumps, i have a TD6 here (arrived on an AA truck Tuesday afternoon) with the 1/4 tank syndrome too...

Supercharger running out of fule

I have had this for 5 years, ever since I bought my 1 year August 2005 old supercharger.

Car would run fine, then start to misfire and eventually I would get the reduce power message and grind to a halt over a few miles. Apparently gauge and senders ok.

Have also had a nmber of lambda snesors as engine management light is always on.

Now I have adjusted to life always keeping the over 1/4 of a tank full and ignoring the engine management light.

This is the first time I have seen evidence of others with the same problem and I am going to get the pump checked out. I would welcome an update from others who have had the same problem and hopefull found a solution.

Pump replacement is the only answer and it only comes as a full kit.

Buy from Dan at Duckworths and get an Indy to fit after quoting a FIXED price as its fidly and depends on the skill of the fitter....

Hello all. Just to say that I had the entire pump system replaced .

However I have another issue . I only drove the car for the first time this weekend and it just felt wrong.

There are two things that are strange. Firstly the exhaust note now seems completely muted it has lost it's throaty baritone.
Secondly the car just seems wheezy pressing on ie down 100+ bhp.

I have asked the wife to have a decent drive and see if she thinks I am going mad but looks like the car will have to go back to the indy. Its annoying because the car was fine before it had the fuel pump issue sorted and now I get it back and there seems to be a different possibly linked issue.

Oh well onwards and upwards.
