Brake judder... Front Hubs..?

9 months ago, I put my 2012 L322 4.4 in for an MOT.. it failed on a slight brake judder... New (genuine Land Rover) discs fitted and MOT passed... only weeks later the judder reappears Sad The Land Rover specialists put a new pair of discs on and on road test, the judder is still there... The service agent (Ex Land Rover trained) suggests that it is possible that the front hubs may need replacing..! To me this is ludicrous, how the hell can a hub go out of shape..?

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this and / or experienced this problem..

I’m well aware of warped disc problems (I’ve been in the industry for 45 + years).

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated..

Mark.

Could be some crap on the hub face.

Could be the calliper binding

Could be a suspension bush on its way out

Could be many things. Get them to dial gauge the disc to see if it’s warped. Unlikely if you have put new ones on but.

If the hub was out or true then surely the wheel would shake when driving normally as the front wheels would also be out of true....?? I would get them to check the upper and lower ball joints and start looking at the suspension before going to swap hubs etc. They don’t come off easily and can be seized onto the shafts even on a 12. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yeah, it seems strange to me that a Hub could be the issues... MOT time is coming up again in January and I don’t want the same issues to be faced...

The joints weren’t picked up previously, but it could well be at 130k miles.. The judder is from the RHF wheel yet there is slight uneaven tyre wear on the LHF and the LHR wheel (outer edges) which could also signify suspension joints...

If they’ve not been done ever then they will certainly be worth doing soon. Thing is at the mot they rarely pick up a slightly worn joint on these things, and if you have uneven wear it may well point to that.

The bottom ball joints are available separately and are reasonable for gen LR ones, you pays you money and takes you choice on arms. Personally I’d go with Lemforder at about £50 a side but many will swear that you should fit LR ones.

All a DIY job if you have patience and big spanners. But if not it’s not a really speedy job at a garage. They just need to make sure the arms aren’t torqued while the car is in the air. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
