Webasto query

Where is the Webasto fuel pump (dosing pump) actually situated on a TDV8 ?

Have look in the 2006-201WM in the Wiki.

Info on FBH pump location about page 2093, under the tank for the S/C but likely similar for the other models where fitted. Cheers

It's the usual story with a Webasto. It doesn't work. It did work briefly when I got the car 3 years ago, but I've just got around to thinking what to do about it. Because the car is so well insulated, I can't hear the dosing pump clicking - so the first job is to make sure it's working. I have a spare connector which I will couple up to another power source if necessary. If the pump works, then I will take the Webasto out to see just how much carbon build-up there is and how much I can clean out. The aim is to have it powered up remotely via a £14 GSM switch - something that I've done on a Defender and with great results.

Not sure how best to achieve this on this model of Webasto as it is designed for the K-bus interface. The simplest option is to switch power to the Webasto from the remote receiver in the back of the car. If that fails, then I will probably change the Webasto PCB to one from either a Freelander 1 or a Rover 75. Both have simple interfaces , are easy to operate and the electronics change is a 5-minute job. It will mean using a new 6-pin connector and leaving the old one dangling unused. I presume it will generate a fault code - but I can ignore that.

Shocked here I am lying on my back looking up at the contrails of your ideas going over my head.

Seriously that sounds as if you've had probs before and solutions to suit. May be talking to the converted but there's a fair bit about faults on here, from pump internal filters, ignitors, water pumps and changeover vlaves. Haven't looked in depth at your model year, but the write up on the 11MY in the WM is informative about operation etc.

Good luck. Cheers

Thanks Richard. I've not seen that thread before. I've been wondering about straying into the laptop testing territory but, being old school, I can't really justify buying a laptop just for this. I've played around with four Webastos recently, using one as heaters for an outdoor pool. The 5KW output brings a 15' diameter pool (with 2" of foam insulation on the top) up to 35 degrees in 24 hours. Warm enough for babies to swim.

The Rover 75 forum is a huge source of information. The emphasis there is on Webastos from Rover 75s and Freelander 1s. These are different from the K-bus variants on later vehicles and are so easy to operate. Apart from the two-pin supply plug, there are just two wires needed on the 6-pin connector. 12V on pin 1 turns it on and off. The dosing pump is powered from pin 6. The other pins are not used. This simplicity makes them very attractive for after-market fitting. My daughter's Defender is as warm as toast on cold mornings - which is not something that you would normally hear.

One thing that we could add to all the valuable information is that the software in the Webasto does a resistance check on the circulation pump. If it's gone open-circuit (which seems the most likely mode of failure), then it won't allow the burner to fire. From my own measurements using a bench power supply and testing two pumps, both take about 58 watts at 12v. That's about 5 amps, but you can't just use an ohm meter to measure the resistance because of the electronics in the brushless motor controller.

For anybody thinking about buying one of these basic Webastos, there are loads advertised on Ebay, mostly from Eastern Europe, and there is at least one person importing them into the UK to be sold on here. Take care with these because there are two different types of glow plugs. Many of the European Webasto glow plugs appear to have square ceramics and these apparently cannot be replaced. You have to buy a complete new burner which is around £150. If possible, it's far better to get a Webasto with a circular ceramic glow plug. These are readily available second-hand for about £30 and new for just over £60.

Cracking info B.

I suspect when you've finished and would be prepared to do a write up it will teach us all a lot. Cheers
