but i built myself an Android auto system for my l405 with
- a Raspberry 4
- adafruit microphone usb (adafruit)
- Bluetooth adapter usb
- a RaspBerry screen 8"

a brodit adapter for the L405 ref Brodit ProClip Land Rover Range Rover -13 BR854909

- an Android auto distribution from bluewave studio.

Works perfectly, can use spotify, google maps, waze, audible (Audio books), phone interface, and all the standard features of android auto.

audio is connected via Bluetooth, to the RR audio system
that is used for Mobile Phone conversations or Music listening

the raspberry is just the head unit for android auto
android auto runs on your android mobile phone. when you plug your mobile phone through an usb cable that is connected to the raspberry, then android auto starts on the raspberry.
the only things you need on the raspbeery
is a sdcard with the android auto software from bluewave studio
a microphone (for google commands)

well you will have the bluewave studio app, you can play music and video and youtube, but if you want android apps such as waze google maps, spotify and everything, you need an android phone connected to the head unit 2013 L405 V8 5.0 Aspirated Autobiography

am i right in thinking that a 7/8 inch tablet with android/ios and a 4g sim would do the same but be self contained.. ... - .- -.

well yes, you could have waze and google maps and spotify, but this mean they will not read or continue what you have started on your phone, and mean you will have a different phone number for people to call you on the tablet
and another sim subscription (although cheap now) and could not have your phone and the tablet at the same time connected to car audio. so either your phone on audio/music or the tablet 2013 L405 V8 5.0 Aspirated Autobiography

the reason i suggested that is that i would have my phone is connected via BT to the FF and the tablet as a separate sat nav with the benefit of waze , igo and google maps.. ... - .- -.

yes, you would certainly have the navigation system work fine,
but the reason why i use android auto is for
- my music on spotify (via the merirdian system) and my hability to navigate it on screen without looking my phone
- my audio books also
- my text message on screen (prevents me reading htem on my phone)
but if it is for nav maps/waze only a 4g table is probably a better fit 2013 L405 V8 5.0 Aspirated Autobiography

I have a Samsung Android tablet with a data only sim. My phone is separate for calls. To have the system working with AndroidAuto through the car audio would it be necessary to have all that you have outlined above?

yes, you will need all of this, remember, android auto runs in realilty on your phone or tablet, and what we call android auto is just the head unit to display and interact with the various car friendly apps interface
