Upper Tailgate

Did the upper tailgate change from 2002 to 2012? If so how? I need a new tailgate for my 2007 and have bought a 2002 and may have made an error. Current cars

Don’t think the metal bit is any different, if anything the earlier ones are less prone to rusting..... could be wrong on that though Rolling Eyes There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Metal and glass is all that I need. Mine has a little rot and prefer to change for a rust free one. Current cars

I’ve bought one to do the same, on looking I think the glass might need to come out as there is no way I can remove the old loom from the replacement tailgate, & I’d definitely wouldn’t be able to feed my loom back in. But if it’s been done be anyone please comment & help us out.

Yes the loom can be changed with the glass in sir... Its like playing with a Rubik's cube but yes it can be done Thumbs Up
comes down the RHS of the glass from memory... Looks more daunting then it is honestly Thumbs Up

The 02-06 tailgates were produced during BMW's ownership and this was when they used the best quality steel!
The 06-09 were Ford owned and got thinner and cheaper steel... Rolling Eyes
The 09-12 was Tata steel and i think enough said! Whistle Yawn Rolling Eyes

If you can find a good early one then you should do alright long term sir/s Thumbs Up

Take your tailgate trims off and take your time stripping out everything off your old tailgate while it’s still attached to your car... You should land up with all the wiring exiting through one hole in the top of the tailgate... only then would I unbolt your old one, fit the replacement with all the trims wiring etc still fitted to it! (Remember DONT CLOSE IT!!!) then with it supported on the shockers (or a trusty old sweeping brush) strip out everything, the same as you did with your original! This will allow you to refit everything from your original with confidence 👍

Two hours I reckon 👍

Thanks
Age and experience has led me to the point where I take my time with most things.
Mind you it could be the fact that I have slowed down in old age. Rolling with laughter Current cars

Got my tailgate this morning and the old electrics were simply cut off the donor car, this allowed me to practice stripping out the old electrics. Took mt about 10 minutes to work out how they were installed and how they can come out. The loom is fed into a gap between the glass and the frame allowing one to pull the cables around the edge of the metal frame between the glass and the frame easily.

Will install mine tomorrow if I feel the urge, or the rain stays off. Current cars

It is much easier when it is in front of you and you are not in the boot looking up and trying to work out how it all goes together.
Working down is better than working above your head although the next stage is working above my head. Current cars
