United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Baltic Blue
My 30 year fatty affair.

First came my 1989 2.5 VM Vogue.
An ex factory car originally issued to one of the European Sales director’s based at Lode Lane.

I bought it as an Approved Used when it was just over 1 year old with 21,000 miles on the clock.

After nearly 9 years of use, I traded it in with over 120,000 miles on the clock.
The only major problem during that time being a failed cylinder head gasket.
This was probably partly down to me adding the front spoiler with lights which I later learned caused a restriction in the airflow, hence why they were never fitted to the VM diesel models as standard.

I also replaced all the brake pipes with Cunifer following an MOT advisory for corrosion on the originals.

Working doing site survey for the first cellular radio site in the norther tip of the Isle of Man.

It served me well as a mobile working office visiting remote radio station sites throughout Northern England.

Too good a photo to not be included... boarding the Brittany Ferry at Portsmouth, going to Caen for a weeks cycling in the Loire Valley, 20th May, 1993... bikes in the back.

Followed by another red one...

A 2.5td P38.

This was the only brand new car I have ever bought.
I got it from Land Rover in Huddersfield on the Eve of the Millennium.
It had to be registered by the end of December to qualify for a massive discount and came with wad of vouchers to cover all servicing costs for either 3 years or 36,000 miles , whichever came first.

The battery failed within the first month .
I called Land Rover Assist and he went to pick up a replacement and changed it on my drive.
The replacement was still OK when I traded it in in 2006 with well over 100,000 miles on the clock,
having toured Norway in it twice via the ferry from Newcastle, which no longer exists, plus numerous other trips around Europe because by then I had taken advantage of early retirement.
Despite the P38’s having a reputation of being unreliable the only other major failure was the rear diff which was replaced under warranty at nil cost.

My P38 in the Alps on a trip to the Italian lakes in 2003.

My P38 in Andorra in 2004

Next came my first L322 a Td6 Vogue in blue.

Again bought as a Approved Used, at exactly 3 years old , so with a first MOT and 27,000 miles on the clock.

2006 to 2015 ... after 9 years and with just over 100,000 miles on the clock I started looking for a replacement, but not in a rush, because it was still running fine and had not suffered any serious problems throughout my ownership.

A point worth mentioning....
The original owner (it was one owner from new) was trading it in for a newly released Td V8, but had recently fitted a set of “special” wheels and tyres which he was keen to transfer to his new car, so I got the choice of the original wheels with half worn tyres or 5 brand new TdV8 wheels and tyres, which I obviously jumped at. Bow down

Then came B.B. my 4.4 td V8 Vogue SE.

2015 - date....

Again bought as an Approved used , this time from Farnell in Bradford.

It’s a 2011,, so just 4 years old when I bought it with 42,000 miles on the clock.

The CSOV valve was replaced soon after I bought it, along with the 4 short hoses on the plenum.
My annual mileage is dropping these days as I get older, so I always intended that this was to be a keeper.

Hence my first major spend was to get it steamed cleaned underneath, all the plastic liners etc. removed and fully treated underneath at a local Dinitrol centre in the hope to keep it rust free.

Also whilst still under warranty I got the upper tailgate replaced because it was showing signs of bubbling on the bottom edge and after a bit of arguing withe JLR, they agreed to complete the turbo drain mod to cure the smoke cloud problem.

I liked the idea of deeper profile tyres, so when Dan was selling sets of L405 take off style 502’s I treated it to a set fitted with Verde all seasons , which also meant I don’t have to fit winter tyres each year, which helps my ageing backache problem.

A new battery and starter motor have been my only other major spends, apart from regular 6 monthly oil and filter changes etc.

Polished to within an inch of it’s life for my younger daughter’s wedding in Snowdonia. September 2019

Great story Mike. See you work / worked at BT. Ditto, I was a mechanic for BT from 1987 to 1995 in various Manchester Locations. Worked on series 2A’s 3’s and early defenders, and the odd classic FF with a variety of Petrol and Diesel engines, wasn’t much we didn’t do on them as some were old and didn’t get an easy life! Good old days, but land rovers have sure come a long way when you look back Thumbs Up

John,
It’s the Classic that I often wish I had kept.
The paint finish and build quality was by far, better than the 3 that followed.

It’s raining today so I have added some text to my original post.

Rolling with laughter As a T. O. I got plenty of them, but after I got promoted to AEE etc the perks stopped apart from a tie I had to wear occasionally.... but I am not complaining.... early retirement on a release scheme when they wanted to get rid of Managers came at just the right time for me. Very Happy Very Happy
