The battery in the key only operates the central locking. There’s a transponder chip that’s separate from the PCB that controls the immobiliser. There’s a receiver just behind the dash, around the key barrel that picks up the transponder chip in the key and unlocks the barrel allowing you to turn the key.

hi peter vids on youtube explaining what to do . i think you can pull fuse in glove box save taking of battery term . under steering column fuse oggy new vehicle purchase

hi, peter try bens garage I think he has a vid ref key that will not turn in ing. I put in the range rover l322 key won't turn to try that new vehicle purchase

Thanks David and Oggy for your assistance : Bens garage on youtube was king and sorted the problem by lubricating the steering lock through the small hatch on the top of the steering column. The T20 torx bolts were a pain to remove as one is set very deeply into the recess which needs an extension to the bit holder. Tool station £8.95 and 20 minutes lying on my back trying to look up under the steering cover and we were done.
