DVLA - New V5 + Tax?

Hi All,
I have bought a second car in the UK from a tradie with the plan to take it back to Ireland. It didnt come with a V5 but it came from a reputable seller and so I figured I would just send away the form and get the V5 from DVLA later. It looks like this will take 6 weeks for the V5 to come back. Big Cry (maybe longer due to covid and my application being in paper....)

According to twitter DVLA have not been processing any V5 docs for a few months...Currently it looks like I will be leaving the car to sit on my mates driveway until the v5 turns up...

Everything was fine until i realised the car has no tax in the UK. I had only looked at the MOT history and not looked at the process to tax the car. I have no problem taxing the car for the one day i will drive it to the ferry etc as I can apply for a refund....but i cant tax it with no V5.

The car is currently sitting my friends driveway. All i want to do now is drive it back to Ireland in a one day shot but with no V5 i cannot tax it. I dont know what the attitude of the Law would be if they spot me on the road to the ferry. The UK is littered with ANPR cameras and the last thing I want is to have the car confiscated.

What experiences have people had if they have been caught driving with no tax on the roads?

I am thinking I may visit a police station and see what they say considering COVID has really impacted many public services.

What do you folks think?

Yea, maybe i shouldn't have used "reputable" they are more of a reseller than anything else. They did state there was no v5 but i didn't realise the backlog i would be faced with.

Cooper1275,

Just remember your insurance will be invalid also if you’re on the road driving it with no current road tax. Whistle 19MY SVA-Dynamic Spectral Chromoflair Blue but colour not available in profile

I had a similar problem when I bought my 3.6 from Green Oval, Leeds (site sponsor). They kindly did what Mike has suggested above and took me to Hull on trade plates for the overnight ferry.

Is there any possibility for you to get someone with trade plates to help you out?

Is it not also possible to tax a vehicle without having the V5 at a Post Office? John

Insurance will cover me as it will be Irish Insurance and they only care about the MOT part, i did check this. But again I dont want to do anything that may put me on the wrong side of the UK police while driving it here. So I am of the opinion I should have tax unless a police officer tells me otherwise.

I will try nip to the Post Office and ask if I can tax the car at the same time i send the V62.

However the V62 states "If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able to tax until you get a v5c in your name"

Just one more thing to potentially consider, I think you'll end up paying for a months tax even if you only need tax for one day? I think DVLA only work in months.... Current FF Westminster 4.4 V8

If you have a dated receipt and are on the direct route from the seller to the docks and the police stop you, they will not confiscate the vehicle, if you are reported, which is unlikely, then you would be fined the back tax payable and a small fine.

This, of course, is presuming you see a police car...!!!

If you send off the V5, when you get it back, stating the vehicle was exported on the day you drive it to the docks then the DVLA will more than likely take no action... They may instigate a fine of the back tax and usually £80 for not taxing it...

At the moment they are running understaffed so the chances are they will do nothing...

If not, get on https://www.shiply.com/ and get it trailered to the docks... Thumbs Up Pete

Don't forget that the 'seller' will have notified the DVLA about the change of keeper.

Thus you must tax it or sorn it immediately.

The DVLA computer is mighty hot on figuring out that one of the parameters has not been met and instantly issuing a fine that is not negotiable!

I know this because..... Sad

(I bought, completed the neccessary for a new V5, taxed it, insured etc, brought to France, applied for tax refund because the car was in France and set about getting it registered here) got fined for not having SORN even though the car was nowhere near the UK)

Whole system is a rip off. L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue. 07MY

In 2018 it cost £500 to bring a 405 from Belfast to the Scottish Borders on a transporter, one taking it from Belfast to the ferry and the second collecting it from the Scottish side and delivering. Maybe worth considering against the alternatives? Only Range Rovers since 1988

Definitely possible to tax at a post office with no V5

I did that when I bought my M3. At the same time I got them to fill in the request for a V5 form. They were very helpful and it was taxed straight away. V5 turned up a couple of days later.

Look online for the closest post office which does car tax. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Well i did a bit more of a search online and found a number for DVLA, got through to a lovely lady who taxed it for 6 months. very easy once i could speak to human! so next step is the v62 and eventually I guess the log book will come.
Once i get it back to Ireland the car will be off the road so I will Sorn it , get a tax refund and register it there.

I did look at Shiply it was circa £250 London to Holyhead, another £60 for a train ticket so that was my fall back.

Guys thanks for all your advice! Thumbs Up
