Dashcam with Battery

Hello,
I am going to document the install of my dashcam and battery into my MY2020.

Dashcam to be installed:
Thinkware U1000 with rear camera
Thinkware Radar
Thinkware iVolt mini external battery

After doing lots of reading I know that I want to have parking mode and giving what I have read about the RR battery I didn't want to rely on that. So I went with the external battery which is connected to an ACC fuse. So it charges when the car is on and powers the camera when the car is off.

After reading a few of the installs in this forum, I wanted to install the rear camera as talked about by dazsear in
https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post550361.html#550361.

So now I have my car and everything at home I am going to try and install it. I will take photos along the way to help document this for other people.

In the thread https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic56450.html I talk about the battery. So after thinking about it. The battery will be wired to the rear fuse panel and there is space for the battery to sit there as well.

I want the wire that battery up so I can check that the cameras work and their locations.

So tonight the job is to crimp the battery cable to the fuse tap. And to splice together the 2 halves of the battery to camera wires.

I will post photos from my phone in a soon.

Tomorrow I will test the camera and fix their locations... SDV8 AB MY 2020

The battery power cable and fuse tap

The battery to dash cam cables

All now crimped and taped or sliced and heat shrink...

Topical of how my day of doing stuff went, my multimeter needed a new battery in the middle of testing the cables. All good for today. SDV8 AB MY 2020

The battery wired in

The battery connected and ready to test with the dashcam

Tested the front dash cam location, mostly on the black part... GPS works without issue.

It turns on with the car and switches to parking mode when the car is turned off... so that is all good...

Tomorrow I will use masking tape to mark the location and attach the front camera to the screen...

For the rear camera a need to wait for a friend to help if I take the spoiler off..... SDV8 AB MY 2020

See the link in my post above. You don’t need to remove the rear spoiler to fit the rear dashcam. I had one fitted professionally on a previous RR and I fitted the latest one myself, both without removing the rear spoiler. MY23 D350 HSE

After looking at the threads again. I really am going to try to thread the cable like dazsear. I need to arrange for a weekend when a friend can help me remove the spoiler.

I know that this job will take a couple of hours to do like this, but I think it will be worth it. SDV8 AB MY 2020

I have left the camera in the boot connected to the battery. I can hear the camera turning on to parking mode and restarting correctly. Hopefully the next weekend I will have time to work on the rear camera. SDV8 AB MY 2020

So today I fitted the rear camera...
I used a zip tie to help feed the wire though the rubbers. Up the d pillar though the rubbers under the spoiler... run down the inside of the tail gate.... inside of the panel and out of the “sun” sensor...

It was a bit scary, but overall nothing to bad... it would have been less pressure if I was doing it inside... I was worried about rain... SDV8 AB MY 2020

I now have the wires coming up the C pillar... A question of the wires and the air bags... Can the wires just go along the inside edge of the head lining or must they go the other side of the airbags?

Also on the edge of the windscreen on the wires Just tuck-in?

I might start at the front with the wires so the excess can be in c pillar. SDV8 AB MY 2020

Wires are now in the headlining. The dashcam is working well. Need to fine tune the connection to the internal hotspot... So it can upload videos if something happens... SDV8 AB MY 2020
