Disco 5

A neighbour is considering purchasing a D5, anyone have experience of ownership?
Do the 3ltr diesels have the same problems as D4, chewing cranks etc?
He won’t be buying new, just decent used.
Cheers Wogger

I’ve driven a lot of D5’s, one over a period of about 4,000 miles. I’ve used them as loan cars and in one case, as a press car, but I’d never buy one / touch one with a barge pole.

It really depends what your neighbour is looking for in a car. The predecessor is better in most aspects if he/she is looking for an all out and practical, spacious, classy Land Rover, with some sense of occasion. Meanwhile, a used SDV8 Fatty, for the same price as a D5, does the luxury off roader thing much more effectively and with a much tougher engine and still manages to feel like a Land Rover product, rather than a high riding, jelly mould, ordinary estate car.

The latest V6 diesel has returned to twin turbochargers and it flies, but none of them are absolutely safe from the dreaded crank failure.

Just had the same dilemma.

D5 or 405.

I had a look at a couple of D5’s at the local stealer, but I’m the end went with the Fattie.

There was one which nearly swayed me, it was a montalchino red one which purported to have the 309hp version of the 3.0. Which was tempting, interior is actually quite nice and is of the LR design theme. Externally it is a marmite car, personally I don’t mind it and How the back end looks depends on the colour. In red it looked Ok. Unfortunately it wasn’t a 309hp one. It was “only” the 250hp version. Compared to the Fattie it was a slightly more practical car, as it should be, with the extra row of seats, but I wouldn’t use them.

So on balance I though, as above, a 12 month older 4.4 fattie With a few more miles on it was the nicer option for pretty much the same money. I had no qualms about buying a D5 with the engine. If you look at Ryan’s thread on it, failure rates are low, especially in the FF, and as it’s a Long known issue to LR you would hope that they have gone some way to address it by now. There were failures on D4’s sports and a handful of fatties and there is folklore that 2.7’s snapped cranks all the time! However over been running a 2.7 D4 for 8 years now as a work hack. Serviced on the button. It’s still on its first engine......👍🏻 Touch wood.

Failures that happened were random, and had no relation to mileage or age. My mates D4 went bang when it had 30,000 on it! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
