Tow bar Eletrical options

Hey guys.

I’ve spoke about this before but a while ago.

Never thought I’d ever want to use towbar Eletrical before until I found mountain biking.

So

1. I don’t even know if my Eletrics work lol.

Reason is I sealed up the right hand side one of the 2 because the spring broke in the cover. Just removed the sealant now to find it full of water.

So what’s my options for either replacing the dual unit or swapping it out for the 1 plug system?

Daz Regards

Remove your current loom set up.
Fit a Genuine 13 pin loom. Plug and play on later models like yours. I think we discussed this before Whistle
Plus you can top up the battery through it via a forum adaptor. Job done Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Yep, get a 13 pin socket fitted. Should just be a unscrew and refit. Have a look at the PF Jones option. Should be pretty much identical to the LR one.

Thank you.

I’m guessing this will come with the bing / grommet to stop water ingress and is just plug and play? Regards

Personally, I would simply replace the existing 7-pin as you just want a trailer board & do not require the caravan facilities.

Far cheaper & its not MOT testable and the 13-pin is.

I would not charge via the rear socket either - I can't see how the charger can read the main battery voltage correctly. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Thanks for the reply buddy.

This brings me onto another question.

I have no clue what the double socket setup I have is for lol.

From your reply I now gather one side does lightboard and one side caravan is that correct?

Could you tell me what side does what? Regards

The black topped socket is mostly lights, the white topped socket is the 7S socket. This powers the the auxiliary systems in a caravan such as the fridge.

All of the functions of the 12N and 12S sockets aren’t combined in the 13 pin.

If you are just using a lighting board a 12N will do the job.

Arguably if you’ve just fitted a 13pin then it should work fine for a good while, and would not be a problem on an MoT in any case, also a 13 pin is much better socket, the connector twists in and In 15 years of towing tin tents I find the 13 pin a much better system.

Job of work to swap is the same, costs £4 more. And you can get a £5 adapter to turn the socket into a 12N if you need. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

A bit of help, I hope

https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/media/1022790/towbar-wiring-mo.pdf

As Brian says, if you just want to carry a bike then a 7pin is sufficient. Tow a trailer or caravan and then it may be worth the change.

As said for the MOT currently I think 7 pins are not checked. Cheers

Thanks guys.

Looks like I should be ok in my existing setup then. As I believe it was the white topped socket that broke. Regards

We've got a 13 pin towing socket on our 2012 AB. The 13 pin electric towing socket has a permanent 12v feed that is connected directly to the battery for powering a caravan so the charger is connected straight to the battery.

In 8 years our car has covered 23k miles so it spends an awful lot of time in the garage with this plugged in. We use a C-Tek smart charger (MXS-7.0) which we've used since it was a year old and haven't had any problems. I'm a firm believer that it works as our car is still on it's original battery too.

The adapters to do it are in the club shop: https://www.disco3.co.uk/shop/tow-electric...c-p45.html

For this reason alone, I'd only fit a genuine 13 pin towing socket on one these days. It's very handy and is straight forward to fit. Take the spare wheel out for a bit more room, unscrew the socket, follow the loom through the spare wheel well unclipping it as you go and unplug it from behind the trim panel on the drivers side in the boot then pull it out from the bottom.

I'll go with David on this.

Call me a meannie, but I use an Aldi cheap as chips "intellegent" charger and it's been fine on mine. Again 13 pin electrics. Cheers

I’ve ordered the pf Jones 13 pin plug and loom as a direct fit so I can replace the twin for this.

Will I need a adapter for my bike rack or will the 7 pin plug fit in a 13 pin socket? Regards

Being an electrical engineer(as one of my hats) I'm familiar with the concept of 13pin charging. However, I still do not quite see how the intelligent chargers can monitor the battery voltage accurately 3m or so from the terminals. Maybe, they periodically monitor the voltage with no current flowing. However, the concept still does not "sit" well with me being old school.

I appreciate that many people successfully use the 13pin for charging but it did not work on my VW T5.

Adaptors are fine but the more connectors in a circuit equals more potential for problems. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

You will need an adaptor as 7pin plugs do not fit 13pin sockets.

(see my previous post regarding adaptors). 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Something like this is the job.

Also available on EBay and amazon for similar money.

don’t Forget Brian that the cabling you’re the rear cubby from the battery is very substantial, so voltage drops should be minimal. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
