I've seen some instances where the "supposedly" younger 17 plate car according to the registration date is a MY16 and the "supposedly older 66 plate car is a MY17
The only definitive way is to try and get hold of the VIN number when the new MY cars were being produced. Everything else just depends on knowing the detailed changes between model years.
