In car hot spot vs IPhone hot spot.

Have found the slot for the in car Wi-fi sim, and am pondering the advantages of the in car solution vs turning on the hotspot on my phone.

Obviously the car Wi-fi is only 3G, vs 4G on the phone, and I have to get an extra data sim.

Couple of questions, will it accept a standard phone contract sim, or does it have to be a data only? Three do a bargain unlimited data sim as a phone sim but not as a data sim.... for som reason.

Is there much advantage gained from the external antenna vs a phone in the cup holder? Is the extra signal strength enough to make up for the 3G/4G defecit?? What sort of connection speeds does the in car Wi-Fi get? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Much simpler and faster just to use your iPhone, isn't it?

Mines older so I don't need to worry Very Happy

I thought the car needed data connectivity for something ?

If it does then 3 data sim £42 for 24Gb over 2 years

After that, everyone for themselves - my wife & kids all have decent phone contracts - I don't think anyone would expect (or thank me) for in car wifi......

Vogue, that’s what I’m thinking...I have 40gb a month on EE 4G, plus another 30 I can pinch of a work line, I was wondering if the 3G was a better connection. Then you get the trade off between signal and speed of connection, so it may work out that the 3G is better than the 4G...

I’m in the phone hotspot camp at the mo....

Not put a sim in yet and I’ve got TMc, and the incontrol works fine. It may need it for something but I haven’t figured out what yet.... I’m not sure if it’s needed for the OtA updates.

Next is to look into sat Nav update...... I think there may be someone in Scotland who can help with that..... slightly corroded chap...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Depending on your contract & where you drive..... My 3 contract won't let me use the phone as a hot spot outside the UK

My car spends 8 months of the year outside the UK......

Interesting. Was thinking of using it on a trip to t’Alps later in the month. Think it’s worked in the past. Will check.

You still in Andorra? Just got back. Had the start of the dump on Monday, looked a promising amount of Snow. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hmmm - maybe they changed it but it certainly didn't used to.

Were you able to do it for free - or did they charge a daily rate ?

This has been an issue for me as well. I tried the 3G I car WiFi, signal was probably better but speed was terrible so went back to 4g on iPhone. --

I totally agree!
I find the LR system just too complicated, unreliable so don’t bother.
iPhone and Bluetooth just fine for my needs Thumbs Up
